Grade 6

Here’s what we’ve been up to recently in Year 6:
Mathematics
We’ve wrapped up our unit on comparing, adding, and subtracting fractions, where students developed strong strategies to work with like and unlike denominators. We’ve now moved into exploring 3D objects, with a focus on identifying and describing prisms and pyramids. Students have been investigating the properties of these shapes, including faces, edges, vertices, and cross sections, and are becoming confident in distinguishing between different types of solids.
Reading
Our novel study on Us Mob Walawurru continues to generate thoughtful discussion and insight. Students are building their comprehension skills by exploring character development, themes, and the cultural context of the story. Their ability to reflect on and connect with the text is growing every week.
Writing
In Writing, we’re continuing to develop factual recounts about the 1967 referendum. Students are working hard to improve their sentence-level skills, with a focus on writing well-structured paragraphs using topic and concluding sentences. They’ve also been practising how to use a variety of complex and compound sentences to add clarity and depth to their writing. It’s been wonderful to see their historical knowledge and writing come together.
Special Event – AFL Q&A with Melbourne Demons
We had a fantastic opportunity to take part in a Q&A session with Melbourne Demons AFL players. Students asked insightful questions, gained inspiration from the players’ stories, and even won some exciting prizes! Throughout the event, our students displayed our school’s PROUD values.
