Grade 5

Literacy

Our students have been exploring the powerful story Black Cockatoo as part of their literacy studies. Through this engaging text, they’ve deepened their understanding of Indigenous Australian culture, perspectives, and storytelling. This learning experience has not only enriched their appreciation for diverse voices but also strengthened their reading and writing skills through discussion, reflection, and creative responses.

Mathematics

This term, students have been diving into the world of 3D shapes—exploring their properties through hands-on tools and collaborative activities. They've enjoyed building on their prior knowledge while identifying, sorting, and describing a variety of shapes. This week, we've also begun our new unit on fractions. Using engaging, practical resources, students are already making strong connections and developing a deeper understanding of how fractions work in everyday contexts.

Humanities

In Civics and Citizenship, students have been delving into the concept of democracy and how it functions within Australia. They've explored key democratic values, the roles of government, and how citizens can actively participate in our society. Through discussions, role-plays, and real-world examples, students are developing a strong understanding of what it means to be an informed and engaged member of a democratic community.

SEL

As part of our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), students have been reflecting on the power of words and the importance of kindness in their interactions. They've been learning that while we can't always control what happens around us, we can choose how we respond. Through thoughtful discussions and activities, students are building skills to manage their emotions, respond respectfully, and understand the impact their words can have on others.
