Grade 2

Dear Families,

It’s been a busy and exciting few weeks in Grade 2! Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been learning across our subjects, including a fun excursion and some wonderful writing.

Spelling Focus: Prefixes and Suffixes This term, we’ve been exploring how adding prefixes (like un-re-pre-) and suffixes (like -ful-less-ing-ed) can change the meaning of words. Students have been using these to build their vocabulary and apply them in their own writing. You can support this at home by pointing out words in books or signs that have prefixes or suffixes!

Information Reports: Our Dream Jobs We’ve been learning how to write information reports by researching and writing about our dream jobs. Students have been focusing on:

  • Writing a clear title
  • Organising information under headings
  • Including interesting facts
  • Using technical vocabulary

It’s been amazing to read about the wide range of careers students are interested in.

Mathematics – Partitioning Numbers

In Maths, we’ve been developing our number knowledge by working on partitioning—breaking numbers into parts to better understand place value. We’ve focused on:

  • Part-Part-Whole models
  • Expanded form (e.g. 45 = 40 + 5)
  • Representing numbers in different ways using MAB blocks, number lines, and drawings

This has helped students become more confident in understanding how numbers are built and how they can be used in equations.

We had an amazing time at Coal Creek! The students stepped back in time to learn about what life was like in the past. Highlights included:

  • Visiting the old schoolhouse
  • Learning about blacksmiths and olden-day transport
  • Exploring the general store and miners’ cottages

This excursion supported our learning in History and gave students a deeper understanding of how daily life has changed over time. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped make the day a success!

Home Tips

  • Try spotting prefixes and suffixes during reading time.
  • Ask your child to explain a number using part-part-whole or in expanded form.
  • Talk about your job and the different skills it requires—this connects beautifully to our information report writing.

Thank you for your continued support!

Warm regards,

The Grade 2 Team
