Year 5/6 Cluster News

HOME INQUIRY: 

Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.  Don’t forget to record your book for the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Mathematics: Students are to continue to work on the recall of their x9 multiplication facts. You may like to create flash cards or skip count aloud with your child to help support their learning with this. There is a fun ‘trick’ or pattern with these tables, can you work it out?

Inquiry: Continue to have conversations with your Year 5 student around natural and artificial sources of light and with your Year 6 student around how our solar system works as we wrap up this unit of inquiry about ‘how the world works’

Current and Upcoming Learning 

Reader’s Workshop: Students will begin by reading information reports that connect to our new inquiry topic. The focus will be on developing research skills and evaluating the reliability of sources.

Writer’s Workshop: In our upcoming unit of inquiry, students will delve into the structures and features of information reports and persuasive texts. Students will enhance their research skills, learning how to paraphrase information effectively.

Mathematics: We have started exploring fractions, learning how to represent, compare, and order them on number lines. This foundational knowledge will support our upcoming study of decimals, as we make connections between fractional and decimal representations.

Inquiry: Our new Unit of Inquiry for ‘Sharing the Planet’ begins next week. The central idea for this is “Living things adapt to physical changes on Earth to survive, influencing and being influenced by natural processes”.

Glow Week:

We are super excited that GLOW Week is back in Week 9 this term. If you have any special skills or hobbies that you’d be willing to share with the children, or if you would like to volunteer for this amazing week of learning, please contact your classroom teacher ASAP- groups are being organised and more information will be sent out soon.
