The Keys to Communication teach us really useful skills for getting along. They help us have constructive conversations and avoid misunderstandings.
Key 1: Gain someone's attention by saying their name and waiting for eye contact
This way, we make sure they're listening before we start talking.
Special tool: Communication tap
The communication tap is a gentle tap on someone's shoulder to get their attention. You can use the communication tap to remember to get up close to someone and calmly gain their attention, in case they don't hear you. Without it, we might end up calling someone's name or yelling louder and louder and louder - until we're frustrated. That's not a good way to start any kind of conversation! This is a tool we can all remember to use - adults included. I know it's a strategy that's helped me in the classroom and out in the yard a lot.
