Art: Lots of Dots

Foundation students have been examining the colourful dotty artworks and life of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. At 96 years of age, she is still creating amazing dotty artworks! Many of our students are familiar with her work, having visited the Kusama exhibition at the NGV earlier this year. The children upcycled cardboard packaging to create large flowers, getting some excellent fine motor skills practice in. They then covered the sculptures with lots of dots just like Yayoi’s artworks!
Year 1s have also been working hard on a dotty artwork inspired by Yayoi Kusama. They experimented with paper-mache techniques to create a cactus sculpture which they painted and planted in a recycled cardboard pot (thanks to a generous parent for the donations!). The pot and cactus were decorated in lots of dots - cut out paper dots and hand drawn dots. So lots of different techniques and materials were used and lots of beautiful dotty artworks are what we now have 💕
