In the classroom...

Junior levels

Foundation students have been practicing safe dance practices and are growing their spatial awareness when dancing in a group. They learnt and practiced two circle dances: "Irish Folk Stew" and "Kinderpolka". Year 1/2 students completed the "Sevens Body Percussion Challenge" routine with the metronome,  and have learnt two more body percussion routines for "Dance of the Sugarplum fairy" and "Stand by Me".

Senior levels

Year 3/4 students worked in groups to transform spaces and objects in the room into a drama set. This hands-on activity helps them understand how to use space effectively in dramatic play, developing their spatial awareness—an important skill in acting. Year 5/6 students have just finished their compositions. This process involved writing lyrics, creating a chord progression for their song or rap, recording their compositions and also analyzing what elements of Music they used in their composition. Year 5/6 students will be starting their dance unit next week, where they will need to learn the dance moves from their production dance and analyze how the elements of dance (movement, time and space) were used in the choreograpahy.

Class Concerts in week 7

I will be hosting class concerts in week 7 for all year levels this term. Students are invited to perform an item at class concerts. This can include playing a musical instrument, singing a song, dancing or a drama performance. Students are welcome to bring in costumes, musical instruments or sheet music for their performances. This is a great opportunity for students to train their ability and courage to perform in front of an audience, and also an excellent chance for students to showcase their musical talents and skills. Last year, we had an excellent time in our class concerts, and students across all year levels put on amazing performances.

I understand not all students are not comfortable with performing, so it is not compulsory for students to perform. These students can practice being a good audience on the day instead and encourage their peers who choose to perform. I can't wait to watch the performances students will put on this year, happy performing!

National Songwriting Competition

Entries are open for the Australian Children's Music Foundation (ACMF) 2025 National songwriting competition! This competition is a great opportunity for students to be creative and to showcase their songs to an audience. I will be talking to students during Performing Arts lessons about the competition, but please discuss the competition with your child at home if you think your child will be interested.

Please see relevant information including prizes, past winners and terms and conditions about the competition in this link: https://acmf.com.au/national-songwriting-competition/

If your child is interested in participating, please email the following to zoe.tsai@education.vic.gov.au by 9th September 2025:

  • A pdf file of your child's song lyrics
  • A mp3 or m4a file of your child's song recording
  • Your child's full name and year level
  • Your child's birthday

Please note that if you do not send these to me before the 9th of September, you will have to enrol your child into the competition yourself before the 15th of September.
