CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week in Reading we are continuing to learn about the structure and organisation of  Narrative texts.

VOCABULARY

Narrative: A narrative text entertains, instructs or informs readers by telling a story.

Initiating Events: What kicks off the story, what happens to the characters; what is the problem they begin to face.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Ask your child to look at a narrative text (can be their readers, a library book or a text of their choice) and ask them to identify and write down the Initiating Events of the narrative.

Your child could use these questions to help them:

  • What ‘kicked off’ the story?
  • What happened to the characters?
  • What occurred in the Story?

An example of a text may be:

KA- BOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!’Splinters of smouldering wood and iron exploded upon the deck of The Blood Thirsty Rover. The entire ship swayed from side to side with the impact. Captain Redbeard burst open the door of his cabin. He cursed and drew out his telescope. “Nightmare!!!” Redbeard gasped, spotting the enormous smoking Galleon with its distinctive yellow flag bobbing on the ocean's horizon. Captain Clementine Nightmare, Redbeard’s mortal enemy had finally caught up with him after all these years!
