YEAR 1 AND 2 SWIMMING PROGRAM
This week, our Year 1 and Year 2 students have begun their 2 week swimming program at Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre. Despite a bus delay on the first day, students have enjoyed the first few days of swimming. They have demonstrated the Wembley Values, and followed school rules while travelling to and form the pool, and while participating in their lessons.
We will include student reflections in the next newsletter.
2024 PREP COHORT TRANSITION SESSION
Last week, on Wednesday 8 November, we welcomed our 2024 Prep students back to Wembley for a cohort transition session. Students were placed in 5 groups, and participated in a range of activities throughout the 60 minute session. Our teachers reflected that all students were highly engaged, and showed a positive attitude. While students were in the classrooms, our parents took part in a Parent Information Session in the hall.
We would like to thank everyone in the school community for ensuring a calm and orderly school on Wednesday morning, and for making our new Prep families feel welcome.
We look forward to seeing our newest members of Wembley again in a fortnight's time, on Wednesday 29 November for our final cohort transition session.
Introducing the Read&Write learning support tool!
We are thrilled to announce the introduction of an exciting new learning support here at Wembley: ‘Read&Write’. This innovative digital tool is designed to enhance student's reading and writing experience, and we are excited to provide it to our students in Years 4-6.
What is Read&Write?
Read&Write is a literacy support tool that assists with everyday tasks, making reading, understanding unfamiliar words, and proofreading written work more manageable. This powerful tool offers a suite of twenty different reading support tools, including text-to-speech, which can be accessed by students when and where they need it. It empowers our students with choice in how they access and engage with content, ultimately improving their reading and comprehension skills.
Read&Write helps in the following ways:
Reading and Comprehension Tasks: It supports students in reading text out loud and understanding unfamiliar words, boosting their comprehension skills.
Easily Create Accessible Digital Resources: Read&Write allows both students and teachers to create digital resources that are accessible to all, ensuring that learning materials are inclusive.
Ownership of Learning: It provides students with the tools they need to take ownership of their learning journey, giving them the confidence to succeed.
Building Confidence: By improving reading and comprehension skills, Read&Write instills the confidence necessary for academic success.
The ability to read is a fundamental building block in a student's learning journey. If students struggle with reading, it can lead to disengagement and hinder their progress.
The reading comprehension features of Read&Write enable teachers to create a level playing field for all students. These features provide students with the reading support tools they need to succeed, understand, learn, and express themselves independently. This ensures that students can progress with confidence in all subject areas.
Getting Started with Read&Write:
Students in Years 4-6 have already been encouraged to install the Read&Write extension on their school laptops. If they haven't, they can download it from the following webstore link: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readwrite-for-google-chro/inoeonmfapjbbkmdafoankkfajkcphgd?_ga=2.244125005.956350075.1612776236-180404095.1584957119
The tool has also been downloaded onto school laptops, for those students not participating in the 1:1 program.
We believe that Read&Write will be an invaluable resource for all our students, especially those who find reading and writing challenging, and we can't wait to see how it enriches their learning experience. If you would like to find out more information about the features, you can find some informative instructional videos via the following link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvSZbmGbKpCTkk3S93CXtQWNf50f_Ow3D)
We look forward to witnessing the positive impact this program will have on our students' academic journeys.
