In Prep we have been learning about the importance of Remembrance Day.
Remembrance Day (also called Poppy Day) is a Memorial Day celebrated in Commonwealth countries, such as the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. We celebrate this on the 11th of November. Remembrance Day is all about commemorating those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country in the line of duty. It also celebrates and supports veterans of combat.
We have been creating a wreath to show our respect and understanding of this special event. In particular, we have been learning about why the Poppy was chosen as the flower to represent soldiers. We learnt that the red poppy symbolises remembrance, hope for a peaceful future and acknowledges the soldiers who fought and died in war. Poppies were chosen as a symbol because they often grew in the battlefields after the soldiers stopped fighting.
Together we have created our Poppy flowers and picked special pieces of rosemary from our school garden to create this wreath. Rosemary also is a symbol that we can use that shows loyalty and remembrance. Together we have used these symbols to show our learning, understanding and respect for this special day.
On Friday the 11th of November, we will have 2 minutes of silence and we will lay our wreaths. We will take this time to remember all those soldiers that have given their lives for us. We also acknowledge all of those who have suffered because of war, and we remember their sacrifice.
