The afternoon will begin with afternoon tea provided by members of the College Orchestra and will finish at 4:45pm. Everyone is welcome to attend to support our young musicians.

House Drama

Congratulations to all houses for their wonderful performances in House Drama on the last day of Term 3. Lourdes took the trophy in a very tight contest. It was a wonderful afternoon of entertainment, and we thank everyone who was involved, and our judge, Mr Nick Lahey.

English - Visiting Author

Selected students from Years 7-9 were given the opportunity to participate in a workshop with Tasmanian author Lian Tanner. Lian shared some of her tips for creative writing and got students to apply some of these strategies to a creative writing activity. The students were really spellbound - you could hear a pin drop!

I learnt new writing techniques for when I’m struggling to come up with ideas in a few easy steps. It was different to what we learn in class and we learnt how to improve our writing in ways that we haven’t been taught before.

Ruby Fishwick Yr 7

Lian taught us two useful techniques to improve our writing: quick and messy writing which helped us to get our creativity flowing; and making a scene more tense and exciting, by slowing it down and adding detail about the character's surroundings and what they feel. These supported us in advancing our writing skills and we all had a lot of fun.

Rebecca Walters Yr 8

We focused on a style of writing where we didn’t stop for 5 minutes and did not edit anything. We did this a few times, writing about a memory and a special occasion. We also looked at creating suspense by dragging out a story, adding the 5 senses. This exercise helped us differentiate between the writing and and the self critiquing/ editing stages of story writing.

Louisa Eaves Yr 9

She taught us her “quick and messy writing” method, which allows her to lay down story prompts onto paper in an efficient (and scribbly) way, making sure she doesn’t forget any details.

Lian explained “sensory detail” which we were challenged to include in our quick and messy paragraphs, drawn from memories or special moments in our lives.

Lian Tanner’s workshop was thoroughly enjoyable and delivered a new and more exciting approach to our creative writing.
