We are learning to analyse the underlying message and themes in texts.


VOCABULARY

Analyse: to look closely in order to explain and interpret it.

 

Underlying message: the message the author is trying to communicate. This could be the lessons the characters learn. 

 

Theme: the main idea or underlying meaning that flows through the text. The theme of a story can be conveyed using characters, setting, dialogue, plot, or a combination of all of these elements.


ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Students read independently looking for messages and themes in their book and record their thinking.

Example: I infer that the theme is (insert)... because I read/saw…

Therefore, the underlying message is… because…
