Foundation

We are very proud of the students for writing amazing superhero stories! The children designed their own superheroes, described them, and then wrote about a problem and resolution. We have explored bold beginnings and practised using onomatopoeia to start stories. It was fantastic to see the engagement and excitement that this theme generated! We have included a few stories for your entertainment.

In Maths, we have learnt about division in terms of sharing. The students have used practical objects such as counters to practise this mathematical operation. We have also been practising counting objects accurately and carrying out counting investigations. Please see the photos below.

We enjoyed playing with the Play Hub equipment and would like to thank the wonderful fundraising efforts of the P&F. It was great to see the teamwork employed by the Foundation students whilst playing. Please see the photos below.

Year 2

During the 'Bricks 4 Kidz' incursion the year 2 students worked together to make a Ferris wheel out of Lego. They successfully used coding to make the swing move, rotate and even change colour.

Year 3 Big Day Out

The Year 3 students and teachers enjoyed an amazing Big Day Out on Friday 27th October. The sun was shining at Camp Adanac and the students relished the opportunity to enjoy the flying fox, hut building, archery and the low ropes course.

The Big Day Out provided an opportunity for year 3 students to participate in team-building activities with peers outside of their class group and challenge themselves to exercise a ‘growth mindset’ by trying activities they may not have initially felt comfortable participating in. The teachers are immensely proud of the cooperation, encouragement and embodiment of the OPS values they witnessed on the day. The Year 3 students as well as Miss Delaney and Mr Woollan would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to Mrs Fountain, Mrs Robey, Amanda and Daniel for joining us and making the day amazing!

Year 4

The sun shone proudly on the Year 4s as they enjoyed their Lady Northcote Adventure Camp experience. Every day was filled with engaging and challenging activities with many ‘firsts’ being achieved, as you can see from these photos. It was also wonderful to hear the camp staff say ‘We love having Ormond Primary School stay with us, you are always so respectful and fun to work with!’. Thank you to the following staff who made this camp such a successful and enjoyable 3 days. Delia Robey, Sandra Johnson, Joshua Woolan, Susan Vissenjoux and student teacher extraordinaire, Rebekkah Cranson.

Student Perspectives - Year 4 Mad About Science Incursion

From an apple falling to the ground to a car rolling to a halt, forces are constantly at work. Last Friday the Year 4 students had a Mad About Science incursion about forces, friction and motion. We also learnt about inertia which is when something resists change in motion. We did an experiment where we put Asprin and water into a test tube then shook it. The lid blew off because the Asprin and water combined to make a gas. Overall the excursion was really fun and I enjoyed it

During the incursion we did experiments such as sitting on a chair covered in nails. Surprisingly this didn’t hurt.  Because our weight was evenly spread out across many nails it reduced the chance of nails puncturing the skin. If you sat on just one nail most of your mass would be concentrated on less surface area and the leverage of the sharp points would make the nails pierce your skin. We did lots of other things too!

Year 5

Last Friday Year 5 students had their leadership qualities tested at the Crack It incursion. Students work in teams demonstrating excellent communication and delegate workloads as they were put through a series of challenging tasks. These tasks included creating spaghetti towers, building bridges, dominoes challenge, word puzzles and ore. Congratulations to the winning team which included Rainn, Moonchan, Ben, Austin and Jordan who won a homework pass. It was great to see how well students worked together to complete the tasks. The day was a great success and the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Year 6 Bread Making Incursion

On Monday 22 of October the year 6’s had a bread making incursion. We had fun and got to try many things like baking the bread and mixing ingredients. Our host Danny and Jace showed us his 6 year old sourdough starter and some of us tasted it.

At the end of the session, we got to take a bit of dough and sourdough starter home and make our own sourdough bread.

Here are Ben and George’s bread from 6B they baked at home:

Smoothie Bar Incursion

On Tuesday the 24th of  October we had our Smoothie Bar Incursion in the hall.

It was very fun and we got to design two smoothies. First we entered the hall and they explained the rules and how it would operate.

At the end of that session they made our smoothies that we designed. When we entered the hall a second time we got to taste our smoothies and were told to perfect our smoothie. If we needed to we could design and make another smoothie to try and have the best tasting one.

During the last session we had to design our speeches and an advertisement for our product. We had to calculate our products price and how much profit we would be getting. We will be using these skills in our upcoming Shark Tank unit for Economics. When it was near the end, all the teams shared our sales pitch to each other and two teams made it to the top. They were “the bloody mermaids” and  “the candy crushers”.

After much deliberation from the teachers, the Bloody Mermaids came out on top and won 1 week of no homework and a day of listening to music while working.
