News from the classrooms

FOUNDATION:

As we have reached the end of our first round of community connections units the Foundation students thought about their highlights from their Monday and Thursday groups.

  • Multisports (Ned, Jace, Braxton): We loved being on teams and playing the game with the gator balls where you have to throw the ball, extreme rock paper scissors and the game where people turned into potatoes.
  • Cooking (Hunter, Harper, Alyssa): Making all the different things because they were so good. I liked getting to make something and give it to my brother who loved my cooking.
  • Crocheting (Evie, Alice, Ayla, Addison): Learning how to crochet, I now know how to finger knit and I didn’t before, we loved our gifts Ingrid.
  • Games (Braxton, Hunter, Ned, Jace): In minute to win it, it was fun playing catapult, I even got the pompom to touch the roof.
  • Boxing (Ayla, Alice): We got to punch each other (with the hand pads) which was fun.
  • Cooking (Addison): I loved making hedgehog.  Dancing (Harper, Evie, Hope, Alyssa): Our favourite things were dance challenges, learning new dances, voting on songs and the dance off.

GRADES 1/2

On Tuesday the 1/ 2 students had the privilege of witnessing our local community in action- Food Share. We walked down to Community House to meet Jodie and Jenna who shared with us the importance of this amazing program that provides a service to many in our town. Jodie shared the history of the Food Share and how the program works. The students also had the chance to meet the volunteers and personally share their donated items. They asked great questions and listened to the stories of how they became involved and the importance it has to not only their lives but others. Before heading back to school we enjoyed some lunch and a play at the Park.

GRADES 3/4

We had two exciting events last week in Grade 3/4 - Dr. Michael Carr-Gregg talking to us about mental wellbeing on Tuesday, and Duo Day on Wednesday.

Here’s what some of the kids had to say about the days:

What we learnt from Dr Michael Carr-Gregg:

Jaxon and Nathan

On Tuesday we walked to a thing called CVCC to  listen to a man called Dr Michael Carr-Gregg. He talked to us about children’s mental health and how the floods impacted us.

  • Noah and Sophie: You can stay happy by having a good friendship
  • Jack and Jed: There are 86 billion brain cells in your brain. Dim the lights down for 30 minutes before bed. I learnt that eggs are really good for your brain.
  • Bentley, Olivia and Myla: Don't judge your self against someone else's actions and opinions. Each night write 3 things that went well.
  • Logan and Nathan: Get up at the same time each morning.
  • Chloe and Hazel: Food with nutrition: Eggs, blueberries, tuna, salmon, avocado and greek yoghurt are the best food for your brain and body!  Sleep: A way to get into a sleep routine is: only drink water 1 hours before bed, dim your lights 30 minutes before you go to bed (a little light is OK!), wake up at the same time and go to bed every night!
  • Evie and Willow: 75% of your brain is water
  • Hayden and Ryan: You should go to sleep at the same time each night as your brain works better
  • Harry and Heidi: You should always drink water because it makes your brain better
  • Jess and Deegan: If you want to learn better, study in the same spot every time

Duo Day:

  • Jed: I am a footy captain for swans. I am a partner with River, Nash and Max.
  • Myla: For duo day I went with Olivia. We wore matching outfits, we wore pink tops and black shorts. The reason we chose to wear matching outfits is because we didn't have time to get a proper outfit. So we went as TWINS.
  • Chloe: For Duo Day I dressed up as one of the chipettes with Hazel as Brittany and Hannah as Jeanette. I was Eleanor the green one! We dressed up as them because it was an easy outfit to find and it was so fun on the day we made up dances!
  • Jack: I am dressed up as basketball players that have won a championship with Archie and Seth.
  • Evie: For duo day I dressed up as Evie from descendants and Milla Stone dressed up as Mel from descendants. In the movie we are best friends and in real life we are best friends. We decided to dress up as Evie and Mel because Milla’s mum is really good at sewing.
  • Logan: I am dressed up as a hippy with Harry H and Brax R why because its from the 70s.
  • Willow: For Duo Day I dressed up as a netball player. I did a trio, that is three and I went with Sophie and Jess. It was so much fun. Our netball dresses were so cute. We made up a dance. It was so cool and we loved it!

  • Sophie and Jess: We decided to dress up as netball players with Willow because we all like playing netball. We wanted to represent the Rochy Netball club together so that’s why we wore our dresses, bibs and medals. We looked so good together - we loved it!
  • Heidi, Belle, Isla: We decided to dress up as a trio using the teachers book week costumes so we came as three dalmatians.
  • Max and Nash: We dressed up as a quad of four AFL captains, with Jed and River. Nash - I dressed up as the Swans captain Callum Mills and, Max - I dressed up as the Brisbane captain Lachie Neale.
  • Noah and Hayden: We dressed up as a duo - Hayden was the Richmond Captain and Noah was Shae Bolton a Richmond player. Richmond is the best team that’s why we wanted to dress up as them.
  • Harry and Brax: We dressed as a trio with Logan, because we thought it was cool to dress up as hippies. We did a lot of preparation leading up to the day, we wore coloured glasses, headband and peace tattoo on our face.
  • Deegan: Ethan and I dressed up as Star Wars characters - Ethan was Storm Trooper and I dressed up as Darth Vader.

GRADES 5/6

In our Grade 5/6 classrooms, our learners have been fully engaged in their literacy studies, focusing on the art of report writing. We've been delving into the significance of precision when it comes to details and how these details come together to create a well-crafted report.

Our maths learning has been focused around fractions. We have been learning how to simplify and find equivalent fractions, add and subtract fractions and find the fraction of an amount. We are now learning about the link between fractions and decimals and how to make conversions.

Last week, our students had a blast at a thrilling sports day event in Kyabram, where they joined forces with fellow primary schools. The sports on the agenda included Tee Ball, Frisbee, Volleyball & Badminton. We are absolutely delighted to report that our students excelled in all activities, demonstrating inclusivity, cooperation and sportsmanship while forming new friendships with peers from other schools. It was truly a beautiful day filled with fun and valuable experiences for our young stars.

On Wednesday this week we had a number of year 5 and 6 students choose to participate in the local cricket carnival. The carnival took place at Windridge oval where we had a girls team and a boys team. It was a great to see lots of students encouraging each other and giving positive feedback.

It was fantastic to see such a great turn out to our year 5-6 life relationships evening. While we hope that all involved were able to learn something, we also hope we opened a communication pathway that will enable children to continue discussing and asking questions about this important topic.
