The Nest
The Nest is an important space in our school to support students who may be feeling overwhelmed by the school environment and/or who need a safe place to help them relax or reduce anxiety and regulate their sensory needs.
The Nest is in the main building, next to the staffroom and is open for the first ½ of recess and lunch to our students. We have a mix of Education Support personnel (ES) and teaching staff on duty to facilitate social play during these times. Our teaching staff will encourage students to access the Nest, which allows the space to stay calm and quiet with a small group of students at a time.
Students can access the Nest throughout the day with the support of an ES or teacher. There are sensory activities and tools available for our students to support them to regulate their emotions, as well as some calming and mindful activities for those who need to reset.
We have found this space to be incredibly supportive for a range of students at Carnegie Primary School, providing a space where they can feel SAFE, CALM and SUPPORTED.
