Year 10 Personal Growth and Volunteering in the local community

In Personal Growth students have been learning about The Barefoot investor steps and Step 3 is "Volunteer in your local community". Many of the students volunteer in their local sporting clubs and so the challenge was to give them a completely different volunteering experience. I contacted our two local primary schools whose principals were very supportive of the idea and so for 3 weeks on a Monday morning Year 10 students have spent time in the classrooms assisting with PE classes, listening to readers and testing students on spelling words. The experience has been a valuable one with the Year 10's enjoyed being useful and working with children.

Thank-you to Donald Primary school and St Mary's for having us.

YEAR 8 SEPEP SOCCER REPORT

“The Kick Off”

Throughout this term Year 8 students have been involved in PE classes in a SEPEP soccer tournament. This involves year 8 students taking ownership and organising their own Soccer competition.  They have been responsible for all of the administration, coaching, set up, umpiring and playing.

The competition consists of three teams, The South Donald Pirates, led by captain Hugo Funcke and his right hand man Elijah Mansibang. The Orangutangs and their captain and vice-captain, Jack Reilly and Suzie Stratton. Finally, the Oompa Loompas with captain Jesse James and vice-captain Milla Adams.

The competition is run by students and Jack Reilly as our president voted for by the class. The rules committee of Daniel, Zachariah and Arleea developed our playing regulations, while Milla Adams and Maya Funcke established a fair draw. The scoring system is: four points for a win two points for a draw and zero for a loss. We also decided on 2 bonus points for teams if the whole team is in their chosen uniform.

The first match up of round 2 saw the formidable Oompa Loompas, who have won every game so far, up against the eager Orangutangs, hungry for their first win of the season. A consistent and strong defence from the orangutangs led by Jack, Ryan and Merchetti could not stop the Oompa Loompas coming out on top at the end of play. Final scores 3-1. Goal scorers for the Oompa Loompas were Jesse 2 and Logan 1.

It has been a tight competition so far with only eight points between first and second and the last team not far behind. At the end of round three the ladder is:

1.Oompa Loompas 4 wins 18 points

2.South Donald Pirates 2 wins  1 draw 10 points

3.Orlando Orangutangs 0 wins  1 draw 4 points

Highlights so far

Students participating have chosen a few of their highlights.

  • Merchetti Douglass from the Orangutangs has overcome his battered shins and aching head to hold his struggling team together.
  • The league’s highest goal scorers are: Oakley Brennan, Elijah Mansibang and Jesse James. They caused havoc for the oppositions defence.
  • Jack Reilly and Elijah Mansibang have contributed well to the South Donald Pirates games after scoring multiple goals in different games and helping to take the win from the Oompa Loompas and pushing the towards their first loss.
  • The competition is going well so far, and we are all excited to see the end result as the finals are right around the corner.
  • Milla Adams, Victory Davis and Arleea Sarre being hard to get past in the goals for their respective teams. “Gloves must be helping”.
  • Sophie Burke showing how tough she really is staying on her feet and continuing to defend hard after being hit firmly in the face with the ball.
  • Maya Funcke taking it up to the boys with her defensive work against all opposition.
