Amazing 5/6

What have we been up to?

We have had a busy 2 weeks on 5/ 6 with assessment and an increasing workload as the term continues to ramp up. As a cohort the kids have responded extremely well to what work we have put in front of them and they are continuously showing a proactive approach to working through challenging problems. We are continuing to support them in how they interact with each other in a positive and empathetic way. Our Leader in Me program is shifting into understanding extreme emotions and how to effectively respond to these situations.

Every morning, we start our day running laps, but this term we have a goal of running to the Paris Olympics one lap at a time. Altogether we need to run 16,781 laps this term and next to reach our goal.

Homework has been extremely positive as the students have followed the expectations for completion and the quality. We ask that you continue to support your child to develop a routine for their homework and find a process that works for them (and you).

Looking forward in our learning:

Morpheme Magic:

This term our spelling program is focusing on the entomology of words, particularly how a base word can be grown using prefixes and suffixes and how building these words helps with the complexity of our sentences and the maturity of our synonym choices. Our focus for the two past weeks was understanding how suffixes change the tense of works. The next 2 weeks is focusing on suffixes -er, -or, -ion, -tion.

Literacy:

In Literacy we are beginning our final writing task for biographies! This will be in the form of choosing a famous scientist or inventor to research and write about. Over the next two weeks we will be solidifying our knowledge of biography structure and all students will be publishing their respective biography!

Maths:

In Maths, students have just concluded their subtraction unit with great success! In the following two weeks students will be moving onto multiplication and breaking down the effectiveness of arrays, vertical multiplication and multiplicative thinking.

From the Students:

Hi my name is Lara and i am a leader in sport.

Hi my name is Jhoz and i am a leader in dinosaurs and drawing.

This week in maths we are beginning our multiplication unit. My group is with Mrs T.  We talked about factors and multiples. For example, 36 has the factors of 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 36. This week we have been  planning our biographies for ight of the notables.

The scientist I am writing about is Jane Goodall. A fun fact about my scientist is that she lived with chimpanzees for 50 years.
