Fantastic 3/4

Term 2 Week 7 2024

What have we been up to?

In book club students are continuing to read the novel Misery Guts by Morris Gleitzman. Students are enjoying individual reading sessions and discussing afterwards their thoughts and opinions on the book.

In the Write 2 Learn program which focuses on helping students develop a strong understanding of sentence structure, we have focused on adjectives and adverbs this week. Our information reports are starting to come along nicely as students have created a plan, having a go at completing an introduction and paragraph 1 to their own information report on an Anglerfish. They have been practising their note taking skills, to use as key information throughout. Students have also continued their learning through the Morpheme Magic program by building their knowledge of word origins and different suffixes and prefixes used in common and uncommon words.

During our year 3-6 maths groups this week we have just finished looking at subtraction. Students have been introduced to different strategies such as using tens frames, number lines and 100’s charts. Our emphasis has been on being able to complete worded subtraction problems. This week students have begun focusing on multiplication, using strategies such as arrays, grouping and repeated addition.

Our Science Unit continues to focus on how we use a range of natural resources in our daily lives. Within Inquiry, students have been exploring the importance of protecting the environment and what we can do to protect and preserve the natural spaces we use regularly. Both of these topics link in perfectly with our Melbourne Zoo excursion the 3-6’s partook in on Wednesday!

Monday the 13th of May, we were fortunate enough to have five St.Kilda footballers come out to speak to our year 3-6 students at Le Page. The students thoroughly enjoyed asking them questions and getting their autographs! It was an exciting and not usual Monday morning!!

In buddies we have continued with readers theatre. Students will all have the chance to be a part of a small play where they can learn lines or help create props for the performance. We have chosen from a range of children's stories as well as Aboriginal DreamTime stories for the students to perform.

Lastly, our Melbourne Zoo excursion on Wednesday was a great success! Students enjoyed exploring the different animals and their habitats. We listened to keeper talks by the Zookeeper which were extremely informative about different animals such as Hippopotamus’s, Elephants, Giraffes and lions.

The 3/4s were focusing on one animal in particular that they were creating a fact file about so they could use it in their upcoming Information Reports. The chosen animals for students' reports included Tigers, Lions, Elephants, Giraffes, Hippopotamus and Penguins.
