Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week is celebrated each year in Australia from the 27th May to the 3rd June. As outlined by Reconciliation Australia, this is a "time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia".
BSC celebrated the week with student designed and led activities, organised within the Year 7 and 8 First Nations classes. These activities included a short speech delivered at assembly, to highlight the importance of Reconciliation Week, and an information stall held in the library with word games and music from indigenous bands, with students speaking to their peers as to why Reconciliation Week is important to everyone.
A group of students also designed a Reconciliation Tree, with the assistance of Ms Conroy and Ms McGregor. They requested all staff and students within their Form Groups, sign a leaf which would be placed on the tree. The tree and leaves symbolise our continued community support, not just during Reconciliation week, but throughout the year. This year's theme Now More Than Ever, asks us as a school community to "stand up, defend and uphold the rights of First Nations peoples. To call out racism wherever we encounter it, and to actively reinforce the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across our country" (Reconciliation Australia). Our tree is a symbol of our walk together in reconciliation.
