Legal Studies Excursion

On Tuesday the 4th of June, the Middle Years True Crime, Unit 1/2 and 3/4 Legal Studies classes visited Melbourne to learn more about the Victorian Legal and Parliamentary systems. After a 6:30am start, we arrived in Melbourne and headed straight for the Old Melbourne Gaol. There, we participated in a court room drama, with multiple students taking up roles such as Judge, Tipstaff, Prosecutor, Defence, Accused and various witnesses. The case was centred on the charge of culpable driving, causing the death of the accused’s best mate, a concept which aligns well with VCE Legal Studies coursework.

We then visited the Victorian Law Precinct, where all three of the Victorian Courts are located. After this, we took a short break for lunch, and explored the State Library of Victoria, before making our way to Parliament House.

We were lucky enough to participate in a mock passing of a bill, in the Legislative Assembly, highlighting the key processes required to pass a law in Victoria. This was followed by a tour of Parliament House, with humorous commentary by our well-informed tour guide.

Although a very tiring day, it is safe to say that we had an amazing time, and learnt many things that apply directly to our studies. We would like to thank Ms Muirhead and Mr James for organising and taking us on this great excursion.”
