National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

27 May - 3 June-Now More Than Ever #NRW2024

Who are our Traditional owners in our area?

The Boonwurrung also spelt Bunurong or Bun wurrung, are an Aboriginal People of the Kulin Nation, who are the traditional owners of the land from the Weribee River  to Wilsons Promontory  the Australian state of VIctoria. Their territory includes part of what is now the city and suburbs of Melbourne. They were called the Western Port or Port Phillip tribe by the early settlers, and were in alliance with other tribes in the Kulin nation, having particularly strong ties to the Wurundejeri people.

St John Vianney’s Catholic Primary School walks with families in faith and knowledge. We are a diverse and connected community who through powerful collaboration and inquiry inspire each individual to learn and flourish in a contemporary world.

At St John Vianney’s we endeavor to create a culturally safe environment for Aboriginal children, students and their families.

Our vision for reconciliation is a nation where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children fully benefit from the education and learning opportunities this nation has to offer, and the broader Australian community truly values, and shows deep respect for and understanding of, the First Peoples of Australia.

St John Vianney’s Catholic Primary School believe and promote that:

  • each child or student’s is entitled to ability to express their culture and enjoy their cultural rights is encouraged and actively supported
  • all staff, students, volunteers and the school community are prepared to acknowledge and appreciate the strengths of Aboriginal culture, and its importance to the wellbeing and safety of Aboriginal children and students
  • measures are adopted to ensure racism is identified, confronted and not tolerated
  • any instances of racism are addressed with appropriate consequences
  • the participation and inclusion of Aboriginal children and students, and their families, are actively supported
  • We follow and use the CECV Aboriginal and Torres Strait Action Plan (linked below)
