National Reconciliation Week

Over the past week we have immersed ourselves in Indigenous games, storytelling, weaving, boomerang decorating and colouring competitions to honour National Reconciliation Week.

A significant highlight for our Fire Carriers was attending the Mass for Healing and Justice at Catherine McAuley College. Led by Bishop Shane, Fr. Brian, and Fr. DJ, the Mass beautifully incorporated the theme of this year's National Reconciliation Week: "Now More Than Ever" with heartfelt addresses and the communal spirit of the event.

We are incredibly proud of our students for their enthusiastic participation and thoughtful reflections throughout the week. Together, we continue to build a more inclusive and understanding community, honouring the past and working towards a brighter future.

Thank you to our Fire Carriers and our Indigenous Education Leader, Ms Johns, for your work in fostering understanding and unity.

some student reflections from National reconciliation week included:

"At school, Bridget and I facilitated a traditional weaving workshop for all ages. We had a strong presence and some terrific examples of weaving were created." - Caitlin

"We went to CMC for the Mass for healing and Justice, the focus was 'Now More Then Ever'. Their school performed a song with clap stick and didgeridoos. Bishop Shane, Father Brian and Father DJ delivered a beautiful healing Mass." - Annie

"My Reconciliation Week activity at school was Indigenous Book reading that was held at the library and Jaara center. I read the book “How Kangaroos got their Tails”. ...

At camp we played Indigenous games and ate indigenous plants with Auntie. Auntie also taught us how to make soap using tree leaves." - Tayden

"At camp, Auntie, an Aboriginal elder, taught us which leaves we can eat and hot to wash our hands with leaves. I found this very interesting." - Eleanor

National Simultaneous Story time

Recently, we celebrated National Simultaneous Storytime as a school. This year's book was the beautiful story 'Bowerbird Blues' by Aura Parker. Our School Captains, Bridget G and Tayden C, did a spectacular job of reading the book for all our students over our PA system. Some classes also chose to complete some activities in their classes.  Check out these amazing Bowerbird drawings from 3/4CF.

You can watch a reading of the story below with AUSLAN interpretation thanks to Key Word Sign Australia.
