One of the things that I have appreciated coming back into a school context, is being involved in a community that does life together, on a daily basis. Every morning, our staff gather in some way, across the campus. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, this is in the main staff room where we are treated to faith stories (Tuesdays) and strong biblical teaching (Wednesdays and Thursdays). Our staff are currently working through the books of Samuel and are daily being reminded of God’s faithfulness through the generations. Every day, our students are gathering in small classroom communities where they too, are immersed in the biblical story. Sometimes obvious, sometimes subtle. Our invitation to all people at MECS (parents, students, association, staff, friends, relatives etc) is to find your story, within our story, which is part of God’s big story. It’s a pretty compelling invitation! Don’t miss out on being a part of that.
A significant part of our MECS history came to visit recently. Jack Mechielsen, our founding Principal came along with past staff member, Andrew White, for a tour and conversation where stories flowed. Jack and Andrew were keen to meet with staff and students alike and it was a great privilege to be able to show them around and help them re-trace their steps of the past. Jack’s passion for MECS has not altered and he was excited at the many things that remain familiar as well as celebrating the things that have evolved and changed. What a wonderful gift these men have been to Christian education, both at MECS and well beyond.
I had the opportunity to join the MP students on their camp at Adanac a few weeks ago. It was invigorating to see our students so engaged in their camp experience. There was plenty of laughter and excitement and the marshmallows around the campfire were delicious!
What a privilege to be a part of our Chin Celebration Day in our Secondary school. I was so moved by Afia Thang’s (Year 12) own story of migration to Australia. It’s gutsy for a student to share a story that is not all roses to her peers and our students were visibly moved by her story. In the afternoon, during lunch, a number of our Chin students performed a traditional dance that saw a packed out theatrette of onlookers. What a privilege to be able to share in the cultural diversity and richness we have here at MECS.
Thanks to everyone who came to support the Faith in our Schools event at City Life Church last week. This was a positive evening of hearing stories of the impact of Christian Schools and being unified in our desire to see Christian Schools being able to uphold our freedom to employ Christian staff. More than 1200 people attended the event, which we hope sent a strong message to politicians. This event was repeated across the country over the past 3 weeks.
I attended the ISV AGM and dinner this past week, which was a good opportunity to hear from this organisation. As a member of ISV, MECS has a vested interest in hearing how ISV might continue to support independent schools. Of particular note, was that Ross Grace, from Heathdale Christian College was appointed to the Board of Directors, of ISV. This is a good thing for Christian school representation. It was also good to see our state Education Minister, Ben Carroll address this crowd.
What a bonus to be invited by our Japanese club to a delicious lunch, prepared by our Learning Assistant, Beth Smith! What a great way for our students to enjoy community than to be around a shared table of Japanese food! Arigato, Beth!
