Year 7 Update

I am thrilled to announce that two of our Year 7 students, Olivia B and Stella M (below) participated and placed in the Bayside Youth Public Speaking Competition. Competing against students from Years 7, 8, and 9, both Olivia and Stella performed remarkably well. Olivia B secured first place and will now advance to the finals, while Stella earned a commendable third place. Both students leapt into this opportunity with enthusiasm and dedication, showcasing their exceptional public speaking skills. I look forward to attending the final and seeing Olivia perform.

Today, I invite you on a journey to uncover the secrets behind coral bleaching—a phenomenon that threatens the very vibrancy of our underwater world. Reefs are home to wildlife, and they protect coastal communities against natural disasters like flooding and storms. But coral reefs around the world are feeling under the weather, and it’s not just a case of the sniffles. Who is at fault and why is it happening? Grab your snorkels and tighten your flippers. Together, we will join the fight and investigate the answers to our burning questions.

First of all, this phenomenon is called coral bleaching. This happens because coral skeletons are turning ghost white. Why? Climate change and warming oceans are causing corals to panic. As temperatures rise and oceans get too acidic, the microscopic algae that once made corals bright and beautiful are getting expelled out, leaving corals without any hope for survival.

Our Year 7s recently had their second Memory Book session with the rest of the school, a time for reflection on their experiences at Shelford. Many students commented on how wonderful it was to reminisce about the memories made this year and, for some, in previous years as well. This session provided an opportunity for our students to reflect on their place within our community and appreciate the moments that have shaped their journey so far.
