Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden (SAKG)

IN THE KITCHEN

We've had a busy two weeks in the kitchen, creating some more winter recipes to enjoy together. Students have been practising their knife skills, using the different grips and chopping techniques such as cross chopping, shredding, slicing and dicing. We have been using woks and electric fry pans safely. They are now all experts at washing up and drying dishes so put them to work at home to help out your family!

We have enjoyed a risotto of the imagination, using fresh vegetables and herbs from our garden, fried rice in lettuce cups and cauliflower fritters... yum! We also have made apple crumble and carrot cupcakes to enjoy after our shared meal.

See below for the recipes, please download and enjoy at home.

In the Garden

Last week was a very busy planting week as we started to replant the cleared beds with new vegies and herbs. We have added broad beans, brussel sprouts, leeks, chives, more snow peas, kale and a variety of herbs to the garden and of course more weeding and thinning out of our carrots. Unfortunately, this week, due to the inclement weather, we had to work inside and out of the wind and rain and added notes to our SAKG book about how to make a mini composter and a teepee for growing climbing plants like beans and peas. The students also revisited the Leavener Lineup experiment and its results. At the end of the session they also completed the Student Kitchen Garden Evaluation giving us feedback re the program.
