Grade 3-6:
Reading/Writing:
Grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 have continued learning about their mentor text “The BFG” during the past 2 weeks in Reading lessons. All senior classes have been able to finish reading the book and the feedback from the students has been very positive as they have thoroughly enjoyed this Roald Dahl novel. It has been great to see conversations between students talking about their interest in reading grow over the past term. Students have even grown quite fond of Roald Dahl and have started to pick up other novels written by him when going to the library every week.
During Writing lessons over the past couple of weeks, students have continued to work on alternative endings to stories and fairy tales. It has been great to see the Grade 3-6 students be so creative in their writing pieces. Students have had opportunities to put their own creative spin on popular fairy tales and alter the ending to the story. Students have begun learning about Circular, Question, Cliffhanger and Reflection endings to complete their writing piece.
Maths:
Grades 3-6 have been working on Time during the past 2 weeks of term, and they have really been enjoying the activities in the classroom. Students have been able to learn how to read a both an analogue and digital clock correctly, as well as converting these times into 24-hour time. Students have also had the opportunity to learn about Time Awareness, Time Measurement, and Time Duration. It has been great to see the students’ skills develop over the past couple of weeks and be confident when answering mathematical questions focused on the topic of Time.
Inquisitive Minds (Grade 3/4):
In the Year 3 and 4's we've been learning about famous inventions and inventors. We've also begun exploring and working through the design cycle. In Week 8 the students were given the design brief that their client wanted some models made of the front of a new house. The specifications included that it had to have 1 door and at least 2 windows. The students created several designs on paper first before having one approved for building. They were given the choice of Lego blocks, connecting cubes or unifix blocks to build it from.
The students did a great job working in pairs to bring their designs to life. Below are some pictures of these!
Inquisitive Minds Project (Grade 3/4)
To finish off our unit the Year 3 and 4's have been paired up and have been given the task of designing something for a real life client, a student from F/1A. Last Thursday afternoon the Year 3/4's went down to F/1A's class and met their clients to ask them some questions to guide the 3/4's with what they're going to be making. Everyone took the questioning very seriously and we're really excited to get underway designing and building in the next few weeks!
