The Next Fortnight of Learning
Literacy
Our phonics focus has been 'air' as in 'airy fairy fair, 'are' as in 'beware the scarecrow' and 'ere' as in 'where? there?'. We will be focusing on revision for the rest of the term and will be revisiting all the sounds we have learnt.
Our mentor text is 'The Sloth Who Came to Stay'. We are learning about prediction by looking at the front cover of a book and discussing what may happen in the story and then justifying our thoughts. We are focussing on interesting vocabulary and how this makes a story more enjoyable to read. We are also looking at the different characters in a story and what traits they have.
In writing students have been encouraged to extend on their writing stamina. They have been learning how to extend their sentences with more details and making sure they are including when, where, when, and why in their writing. We discuss the importance of using 'because' to make a sentence complete.
Maths
Students continue to develop their place value knowledge to 100. They are learning the importance of careful counting and how we can organise a pile of objects so we can count accurately and efficiently. If you want to join in the fun with your children at home, you can pour and scatter some different objects and ask them to count and sort them for you. Are they grouping by 2s or 10s? Ask them how we have been sorting with the use of tens frames.
Inquiry
Our inquiry unit for the term has focused on all the services in our community and the important role these services provide for us all to keep safe.
We were lucky to have a special visit from a police officer, crossing supervisor and some SES volunteers. All students enjoyed this experience as I am sure you heard all about. To complete our Inquiry unit, we are having a special day where children can come dressed up as a helper of the community. Please see important dates below.
Wellbeing
Students have all made a 'ready to learn' scale and have now completed their ready to learn individual plans. We discussed the different stress triggers and how this can make us feel. Children then decided on an activity they can choose when they are feeling this way such as colouring in for 5 minutes.
Some photos below highlighting the fun we have had learning about Community Helpers.
