When it comes to teaching kids how to read and write, it's important to use methods that are based on evidence and research. One important method is teaching phonics, which helps children understand the sounds that letters make and how they come together to form words.
In Prep to grade 2 at Skye we are following an explicit and systematic approach to teaching Phonics which is based on research and evidence, The Little Learners Love Literacy is a fun program designed to help young kids learn to read in a step-by-step way.
We use exciting activities like games, music and crafts to keep kids engaged.
The program is divided into seven stages, each carefully planned to make sure children never feel overwhelmed. We only ask them to read things that match their skill level and that they've been taught how to read.
One special part of the program is the Decodable Books. These books are especially beneficial as they only use the sounds and letters that kids have already learned, so they can read them all by themselves which leaves our students feeling successful each time they read. These books are full of stories that our students really enjoy reading, which helps them feel proud and confident in their reading skills.
It’s important to be reading at home. All students at Skye Primary school have a login to the Australian Decodable Readers site where they are able to access texts at their level to read.
