Senior School News

Ms Grant

Acting Assistant Principal Senior School

Our senior students have been working diligently all semester. Students have relished the opportunity to go on a range of excursions as part of their studies, including a Year 12 Physics excursion to Luna Park, a Year 12 Sociology expedition to the Bunjilaka Exhibition at the Melbourne Museum, a Year 10 outing to the Holocaust Museum in Elsternwick, a Year 11 trip to the Melbourne Magistrate’s court and a Year 12 Biology adventure to Casey Tech to learn all about bacterial transformation. These are just a few of the many opportunities our senior students have had to go outside the college and learn in the real world.

Students always come back excited and with a deepening passion for their studies at school. I would like to thank all the wonderful teachers, leaders and support staff who have worked hard to bring these amazing opportunities to our senior students. In early May, all Year 11&12 students visited the Careers Expo at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre at South Wharf to learn about the many possibilities open to them once they complete their final certificates. This is the biggest careers expo in Australia and a wonderful opportunity for our young people. Students came back full of new ideas and with a renewed enthusiasm for working hard to work towards their personal pathway goals. Thank you to our brilliant Careers Team for this terrific opportunity.

We were all incredibly proud of our Unit 3 Theatre Studies class, who staged a magnificent production of Matt Cameron’s Man the Balloon in April. It was a spectacular night of entertainment, made all the more impressive by the fact that the students ran the show independently, so much so that the teacher could sit in the audience and watch! This was an outstanding performance, and we are incredibly proud of the students who worked together so beautifully to bring this production to life. You can read more about this from our Head of Arts and Technology, Linda McGloin.

It has been fantastic to see lots of our senior students taking advantage of Study On, our after school homework and tutoring service. This is open to students from Years 7-12 every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday after school in the library. We have a number of highly talented tutors there every afternoon, ready to support learners with a variety of subjects. Please see the current Study On Tutor availability, which is also always available via Compass in the Newsfeed.

Our college is once again undertaking the Premiers’ Reading Challenge and this year we are opening it up to Year 10, 11 and 12 students too. There are great prizes up for grabs and I encourage all senior students to pick up a book and get involved. Reading can be a great way to relax in between studying for SACs and exams. More information is available in the library, on Compass and via English, Literacy and EAL teachers.

Our Year 12 students (and Year 11s undertaking a Unit 3&4 sequence) are gearing up for the very important General Achievement Test (GAT) in June. On Wednesday, May 22, the students completed a Practice GAT to ensure they are ready for the real thing. This is a crucial part of the VCE year as the GAT is used to moderate school-assessed coursework and the end of year exam. We wish all students undertaking the GAT well in completing this significant milestone. With end-of-semester exams and practice exams on the horizon, we are proud that our senior students are working hard to complete their first semester units and are striving for their personal best.

We’ve recently undertaken a reset of our Study Hall space, which is a quiet, independent learning space for students to use during their Study Hall periods. It has been heartening to see students getting focused on learning and making the most of their private study times. On behalf of the Senior School Sub-school teams, I wish students well as they work to complete the semester and look forward to celebrating their achievements in upcoming celebration assemblies.
