Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Last Thursday and Friday saw the finest of Marist in action with our Track and Field Team taking out their ninth straight AIC secondary championship and third straight primary championship. This is a remarkable record in any context of sport and is a testament to the culture and commitment of our athletics community of boys, parents, staff and coaches. The margins to second in both competitions was an impressive 99 in the primary and 183 in the secondary. With 15 first or second places in the first 20 events on Thursday it was simply impressive to witness the team in full flight.

On behalf of the College I congratulate all team members and track and field participants throughout the season as the success in what is really an individual sport, comes down to the depth and ability of the whole squad. To highlight this, in a number of events our Division 2 athlete would have podiumed in the Division 1 event if he were competing in it. There is a healthy competition for places in the Marist athletics team, a competition that challenges boys to be better, to develop resilience and dig deep to earn their place, and it ultimately drives performance. Well done to all the young men who participated in track and field this season.

Thank you to our Head Coach Mr Robin Martin for the incredible commitment you display, coupled with your passion for your old school, and your technical knowledge. As far as Head Coaches go, you have the complete trust, respect and love from the boys and staff involved in your program. The countless hours and commitment you put in is without peer in the AIC and is a huge contributing factor to this success. Thank you also to Mr Richard Graham as Director of Track and Field for your organisation, planning, preparation and support of the staff and the boys, and Mr Mitch Reid and Mr Corey Lucas for administration assistance. Special mention to Mr John Lambourne who works tirelessly in the Primary school, knows all the boys well, encourages, challenges and supports their development and sets the whole program off on the right foot from the start. Also thank you to the dedicated team of teachers and expert external coaches for your time, knowledge and skill in helping our team achieve this feat. Finally, thank you to our captains, Lee Martin, James Prole, Joel Drew and George Daly for your leadership of the boys.

AIC Track and Field Champions

The Marist AIC Championships team performance in 2023 left many in the coaching team as well as those connected to the program speechless. In winning the 9th AIC Senior title in a row, this Marist team has created new history and surpassed many of the incredible Track and Field squads seen from Marist in the 1970’s-1980’s where Marist saw 2 separate groups win 6 consecutive titles in that time. The current win connects teams all the way back to 2015 and we spoke of “legacy” at our recent camp connecting athletes/coaches/supporters across the years who have supported the track and field community on this historic journey.

After reflecting on the hard work and training in Term 3 and Term 4 the boys marched past their peers on Day 1 to the school bus at First Break sensing there was something special ahead. While competing, Marist was prominent in the Hurdles (4 wins/2 placings) and Shot (6 wins) in Day 1 with ten wins plus a string of strong Top 3 placings in the 1500m and early rounds of field rotations. The Day 1 lead of 71 points was a handy buffer however the athletes were reminded against complacency and to focus on the small things that would allow the team to maintain the points lead. The coaching team was impressed with the commitment of the team on Day 2 and the athletes were professional in their execution. The team pulling together with excellent performances in the field with many victories and placings in triple, long and high jump, consistent high placings across all throws including several Day 2 wins in discus and javelin with track success in 3K, 200m, 800m and 100m pushing our lead higher. The squad dominated the 400m with 3 wins and all runners placing, before 4 relay wins to close out the day. The points gap to 2nd placed Padua was as high as seen in recent years with a 183.5 point win. A dominant victory.

The final points had Marist with 4 age group trophies (13, 14, 15, 16 Years), plus two 3rd places in Opens and 12 Years. This was a Marist team performance for the ages putting an exclamation mark on Marist having one of the strongest school athletic programs in Australia.

Our Primary squad was not to be outdone and with an incredibly deep Year 5 group committed to the Marist cause and a hardy Year 6, both years won their trophies, winning the aggregate. Mr John Lambourne should be congratulated for his work in winning their 3rd consecutive AIC Junior trophy. Well done.

Marist is fortunate to have a coaching team like no other at school level including:

College Coaches – Mr Will Burkett, Ms Maddie Spann, Ms Eli Kenny, Mr Andrew Fogarty, Mr Laurie Boustead, Mr David Meehan and Mr Paul Knight.

External Coaches – Mr Eric Brown (Head of Jumps), Mr Des Davis (Head of Throws), Mr Paul Kearney, Mr Tim Castley, Mr Cameron Pfeffer, Mr Bill Prole (Head of Distance), Mr Brendan Saunders, Mr Gav Hunter, Mr Connor Duggan and Mr Jeremy Davis.

Old Boy Coaches including – Mr Zack Newsham, Mr Dan Drew, Mr Carl Martin and Mr Tom Prole.

Thanks to our team co-captains James Prole and Lee Martin plus supporting vice captains Joel Drew and George Daly. All four were Queensland representatives leading with distinction and high performance along with many of their Year 12 open team members who leave Marist having never been defeated at the AIC Championships.

Mr Will Burkett has been a consistent presence bringing innovation to training. While a special thanks to Mr Richard Graham, the Director of Track and Field who has navigated his first season back with Marist, looked to improve the coordination and logistics of the program in many areas and taking the team to a championship in 2023. Thanks to Head Coach Mr Rob Martin for his support and dedication to all Marist athletes throughout this successful 2023 season.

AIC Best performances: On two days of incredible performances across the team just a few to highlight –

  • Connor Campbell 14 Years. An amazing 7 events, 3 wins, 6 placings across Jumps, hurdles and sprints. An Iron man performance.
  • Isaac Maestonbroek – 3 throws in 12 years and 3 second places.
  • Ash Kani and Josh Dempsey asked to step out of 16 years into Opens after a series of injuries in that age group. Both competed well a year above showing Marist’s depth.
  • Great momentum from shot put and hurdles squads on Day 1 including Jono Kirk/Lee Martin/Isaiah Burgess winning Division 1 Shot Puts convincingly and Joe Jackson winning his hurdles event after only taking up the discipline in Term 3. Shea Caminiti, Isaac Ting and Joel Drew joined in winning Day 1 hurdles events.
  • Sania Elisala and his 4 victories showing incredible skill from 100m to 400m.
  • Hayden Lockhart 13 Years 4 events, 3 wins, and 2nd place (100/long/triple/relay).
  • Hunter Chan-Riotto First year in track competing in 5 first division events.
  • Asher Parkin’s spirited 3rd in the Open 3000m against athletes 2 years older and 2 timely wins in 16 Years 800m/1500m.
  • James Prole never giving up in a close 2nd to a World ranked distance runner 1 year older.
  • James Wintzloff leading the team in a series of cheers on the back straight during the middle distance.
  • Jake Musgrave – winning both his jumps in Long and Triple.
  • 4 sprint relay wins and a 2nd in the 6x400m to consolidate the Senior trophy victory.

AIC Primary Performances

  • Fred Little – 5 events, winning 3 and placing in the others.
  • Nathan Wright – 5 events placing in all 5 with 2 wins.
  • 3 Relay wins and a 2nd to close out the day and win the junior aggregate trophy.

This team found a different way to win this year relying on depth across the squad rather than individual efforts in a few disciplines where every athlete pulled their collective weight to contribute. Marist has now won 9 AIC titles in a row which is unprecedented, and the team look forward to defending our title in 2024 seeking a historic 10th victory.

Thanks to Mr Rob Martin

A big thanks to Mr Rob Martin who has led the squad magnificently again in 2023.

The time and effort he has contributed to the program has been extraordinary. His knowledge of the technical aspects of Track and Field are exceptional, whilst his passion for the sport, his genuine care for the students, and his desire to see them all reach their potential has been a key reason for the strong and healthy culture in the Marist Track and Field squad.

Not only has he overseen the past three AIC Championships, he also coached the College to the U17 Intermediate National School Challenge title in 2022.

Thanks Mr Martin.

Congratulations

Congratulations to James Chapman who was selected in the recent U16 Emerging Reds Cup. James joined Elliot Aldridge and Xavier Howard in the four-day tournament at Ballymore as the first official step in the Queensland Rugby pathway.
