Year 8 Day
Year 8 arrived at school chilly but ready for a day of fun. After some quick changes to venue and the speediest pack up of the hall that has ever happened at Narrandera High School, Year 8 got straight into their first session.
Mrs Donaldson ran the first session starting with some relays. Students were not allowed to use their hands to pass the ball back and forward to their teammates resulting in some exciting scenes. A team of girls were the clear winners despite some less than legal attempts to take them down. Mrs Donaldson then moved into some boys vs girls challenges. The boys tried hard but on the day they were no match for the girls who displayed impeccable teamwork to win the challenges with a clear margin. Mrs Donaldson’s final challenge had house groups working together to help a blindfolded teammate retrieve a pool noodle. Some teams were generous to their teammates and gave great directions. Other teams decided to send their teammates to the other side of the oval, Ross and Jamin were particularly abandoned by their teams and had to find their way back on their own.
The second session of the day involved some building. In small groups Year 8 were challenged to build the tallest self standing tower with an assortment of random materials. Teams tried a variety of different approaches, but many towers fell or lost height when Mr Dore did the official measuring. The winning team of Chelsea, Milla, Ethan, Blake, Liam, Nate and Alexis proved they knew how to build both a tall and stable tower. Next teams moved into building bridges. There were some interesting definitions utilised for what a bridge is but all teams succeeded in building something that could hold weight.
In the final session of the day Year 8 competed in a trivia competition mixed with parlour games. The competition was tight and Mrs Moore made sure every team was credited with fractions of points that they deserved. In the end it was the tower winning team who also won trivia in a very close final.
Overall, Year 8 had a great day participating in a range of different activities to test their knowledge and abilities. They were able to try lots of different skills and work with people they don’t normally work with.
Thanks to Jess for the delicious catering, Mrs Donaldson for all of her activities, Mr Dore for his measuring skills and participation in activities and Mrs Moore for her meticulous scoring and encouragement throughout the day.
