Octavia Community

Year 6

Greetings Families,

We have had a fantastic term of learning in the Grade 6 Octavia Learning Community. The Grade 6 team is very proud of our students and the progress they've made this term. We hope all of you have a restful school holidays.

Reading

Students selected and read complex texts for a range of purposes, and applied text processing strategies to recall information and consolidate meaning.

Writing

Students have been drafting, editing and publishing their procedural texts.

Mathematics

The Octavia Community has been learning about Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. They have been working on multiplying, dividing, simplifying and converting. In Applied Maths, Students used chance vocabulary to determine the likelihood of events. They used their knowledge of fractions and decimals to determine why the theoretical chance doesn't always match the results.

Inquiry

Students have been working in groups to finalise their 'Race Around the World' projects. Each group used mapping and navigational skills to plan their journeys and worked out the details needed to complete activities and visit natural and man-made features.

Reconciliation Week (27th May to 3rd June)

The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, was unpacked by our grade 6 students. They read First Nations texts and researched the Stolen Generations to learn more about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and explored how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Refugee Week (16th June to 22nd June)

Octavia students learnt about what is a refugee, the issues that they face and the contributions that refugees are making to the Australian community. A big thank you to Ahod for visiting our classes and giving a presentation about her journey to Australia from Iraq!

Camp (19th July to 21st July)

Grade 5 and 6 students travelled to PGL Campaspe Downs Camp on Wednesday 19th July. They participate in a variety of different activities - catapults, canoeing, leap of faith, sensory trail, rock climbing, aeroball, orienteering and flying fox.
