Icarus Community Report

Welcome families,

We have had a fantastic term of learning in Icarus (Year 3). We wish all of our families a restful school holidays. Your Year 3 Teachers -Kartia, Ben, Michelle, Ritu and Christina.

Reading

This Month we have been looking at 'author's purpose' and whether a text has been written to entertain, inform or persuade. We have also been discussing the different text types and genres. Also, whether we enjoyed the texts and how the author used the text and pictured to help us understand better. We have been practicing our reading skills of critiquing and analyzing.

Writing

We have loved writing this term about our neighbouring countries of Australia. We have written information reports about these countries and discussed the daily lives of people from these countries, their culture, foods they eat, the environment of these countries and the native animals. The Kiwi bird was a popular topic to write about for New Zealand and learning about some of the delicious foods people like to eat from these countries and how it is different to Australia.

Maths

This term students learnt to explain the difference between the perimeter and area of a shape. They also learnt to calculate the perimeter and area of a shape. Students learnt to classify a range of 2D and 3D shapes. They were able to describe the properties of various 2D shapes like circle, square, rectangle etc. They also explored different types of triangles and their properties. They learnt to describe regular and irregular polygons. Students were also able to identify and describe the properties of 3D shapes like sphere, cone, cylinder, cube etc. We created 3D shapes by using net.

We learnt how to collect data by doing surveys. Students further learnt to interpret and compare data from surveys by using bar graphs and pictographs. They also learnt how to conduct chance experiments, record results of the experiment and explain why the variables change.

Inquiry

This term in Inquiry, students have explored the topic ‘Who are Australia’s closest neighbours?’ As part of this unit, students were given a challenge brief where they were asked to research a country of interest to them. Have a look at some of the amazing work our students have completed!
