Grade 5

Sarah Sussman & Ronan Stafford

Reading

This term we read the book Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick and then we watched the movie directed by Martin Scorsese. We looked at the differences and similarities between the two and we did a character study including how they grew and changed throughout the story. We also looked at the themes in the story including magic, poverty, friendship and truth. We learnt where these themes were shown and how they impacted the characters.

Writing

In writing, we have also been focusing on the film and book of Hugo Cabret. We have been doing an independent writing piece on our choice of event in the film or book. Some of our choices we’ve included writing about landmarks or events in Paris, where the book was set, movie/book reviews, information reports and many more! Here are some photos:

Inquiry

In inquiry, the grade 5’s have been working on a natural disaster diorama which has been presented to the whole school. We have also studied many other types of disasters and recorded them in our inquiry book (e.g. tornadoes, tsunamis and volcanoes). We have answered questions, learnt how they occur and considered the effects of communities.

Maths

This is an update of what year 5’s have been learning in maths. In maths our main topic is multiplication. We have been learning about LCMs (lowest common multiples) and HCFs (highest common factor.) We have been memorising times tables through games and by partnering up with a buddy and testing each other on our time’s table skills.
