Science at BPS

Term 3, Week 2

This term in Science all students will be looking at states of matter - solids, liquids and gases. We will also be working through the scientific method, focusing on scientific questions, reasonable predictions, making formal measurements and careful anaylsis of results.

Every year level has begun with a simple experiment - Foundation students added dish soap to glitter to see what would happen; Year 1 and 2 students had to fnd a way to melt ice the quickest; Year 3 and 4 students produced carbon dioxide to inflate a balloon; and Year 5 and 6 students saw the reaction of Mentos and cola, noting that no sugar soft drinks had a far better reaction that full sugar.

Science Day at the end of last term was a great success, with students from all year levels completing dinosaur themed activities, including salt dough fossils, pastasaurus's, cotton tip skeletons, dinosaur eggs, paper flowers and dino bridges. Foundation to Year 2 students also participated in a dinosaur scavenger hunt around the school. A clear favourite of the day was the amazing liquid nitrogen show, performed by James from Mad About Science.  He shattered rubber ducks, made lids pop of cans, took the air out of a balloon dog, lit a fire inside a bottle and showed us the elephant toothpaste experiment!! It was a really great start to our Term 3 Chemistry unit!

I don't know about you, but I don't trust atoms... They make up everything!!
