Positive Self-Talk

Positive self-talk is an important tool for building confidence and resilience. It involves talking to ourselves in an encouraging and supportive manner, which can help us navigate challenges, enhance our self-esteem, and maintain a positive outlook on life. By practising positive self-talk, we can learn to replace negative thoughts with constructive ones, empowering ourselves to handle difficult situations more effectively.

Whole Family Activity: Positive Affirmations Jar

  • Gather as a family around the dinner table, in the living room, or another cosy spot.
  • Each family member writes down positive affirmations or encouraging statements on small pieces of paper. Examples include: "I am capable," "I can handle anything that comes my way," "I am proud of myself."
  • Put all the affirmations in a jar.
  • Take turns drawing an affirmation from the jar and reading it aloud.
  • Discuss as a family how each affirmation makes you feel and share instances where using positive self-talk has helped in real-life situations.

Family Habit Builder: Daily Positive Reflection

  • At the end of each day, around the dinner table or during bedtime, ask everyone to share a positive thing they did or experienced that day.
  • Discuss how using positive self-talk might have influenced their actions or feelings.
  • Encourage sharing of strategies to maintain positive self-talk, especially during challenging times, and explore new affirmations or encouraging phrases to add to the family’s Positive Affirmations Jar.
