Careers & Pathways

Greetings Bemin Secondary community. It has been a busy term for Year 10's pathway planning for their Year 11 subjects.

In order to assist students to explore a variety of careers, selected Year 10 students participated in this years Rail Career Immersion Day, visiting the Rail Academy in Newport. Khalid from 10H reported on the day:

we learnt a whole lot of different stuff, starting with a safety briefing and the role of the Rail Safety Officer. Trains can not run without this staff member, as there are a lot of hazards to think about when you have a train that takes 1 kilometre in advance to stop. We inspected the rails and they showed us the use of ammunition on the tracks. this is used to alert drivers that it is now safe to continue their journey. Protective wear is important for all train employees, as visibility is key when working on and around the tracks. We got to sit in the drivers seat of a train and check out the brand new trains that will be used soon. We heard from other roles within the rail industry like key electrical officer, who operates the lights and makes sure power is accessible to the trains. Train drivers, engineers and maintenance technicians are also some of the jobs available. We had a great time investigating the rail academy and look forward to opportunities to to explore other industries.

Many students have ventured into the world of work, Jibreel from 10F offered insight into his work experience:

I was fortunate enough to do Work Experience placement at Ultra Tune Truganina every Wednesday and Thursday for 3 weeks. I really enjoyed it as I got to socialise and work with others. I was really interested in the job. I learnt how to change wheels, how to put a new tyre on a rim and the names of different types of machinery. I enjoyed working on cars and learning how they work. I am hoping to do a few more weeks placement tat Ultra Tune in Term 3.
