As we finish Semester 1, it’s essential to reflect on one of the critical factors that contribute to a student's success: good attendance. At Bemin Secondary College, we are committed to providing a high-quality education and fostering an environment where every student can thrive. Consistent attendance plays a pivotal role in achieving these goals.
Regular attendance is directly linked to academic achievement. Students who attend school consistently are more likely to perform well on assessments, complete assignments on time, and grasp complex concepts. Each day of school builds upon the previous one, creating a cumulative learning experience that cannot be replicated through make-up work alone. When students miss school, they miss valuable instructional time and fall behind their peers, making it challenging to catch up.
School is not just a place for academic learning; it is also a vital space for social and emotional growth. Regular attendance helps students develop strong relationships with their peers and teachers, fostering a sense of community and belonging. These connections are crucial for building self-esteem, improving communication skills, and developing empathy and teamwork. Students who attend school regularly are better equipped to navigate the social environment and form lasting friendships.
Good attendance habits established in school lay the groundwork for future success. Punctuality and reliability are essential life skills that are highly valued in higher education and the workplace. By attending school regularly, students learn the importance of commitment and responsibility, preparing them for the expectations of adulthood. These habits will serve them well throughout their lives, helping them to achieve their personal and professional goals. Good attendance habits will hold students in good stead to meet the requirements for seniors school VCE and VCE-VM programs.
On average, students who go on to be chronically absent in their later years of schooling have higher absence rates than their peers in primary school, starting as early as Grade Prep. It is never too early or too late to establish positive attendance habits.
