Unit 1 & 3 Music Performance Recitals

On Wed 12 and Thu 13 June, our Unit 1 & 3 Music Performance students performed the assessment pieces they have been working on to a friendly audience of family and friends. This formed an important part of their assessment for Units 1 & 3.

On Wednesday the 12th and Thursday the 13th of June, VCE music students had our solo recital. In Unit 1, we had to perform two contrasting pieces to demonstrate a variety of skills and techniques, with one piece including live accompaniment. We have been preparing for this all semester in our performance practice classes, beginning by only performing a few lines from a piece. As the term progressed, we learnt to play and perform the full pieces and received feedback on things like dynamics and volume. As part of our assessment, we had to manage all the equipment ourselves. This included bringing on chairs, music stands, placing microphone stands and setting up backing tracks. The performance went well, with lots of family and friends coming for support and everyone successfully playing their pieces. Performing was nerve racking, but after settling in onstage the nerves calmed down and I enjoyed performing. Overall it was a good experience and we will receive valuable feedback to improve for unit 2. ~ Kaylee Freeman, 11B

Concert Band

Our Concert Band rehearsals are often a little bit unique and quite different to your average band rehearsal. We are always encouraged to think outside the box when practising to see what changes. One particular activity that we did in our last rehearsal was taking our instruments to different corners of the theatre to do some basic rhythms to see how it would sound.  We then all shut our eyes and had to practice listening to each other to stay onbeat.

Another activity we did was moving around the instruments around the stage for example the one base was where the flutes usually are, and the xylophone was where the trumpet would be. This was a very too way to actually hear how the band works and understand why we split up into these sections. By encouraging us to listen to the band from multiple perspectives Ms Smith and Mrs Newstead help us develop a good ear for balance and projection. ~ Ellie Papenfuss, 9A
