Year 9 Media

What a fun and exciting Semester 1 we have had in Year 9 Media. We started off the Semester looking at Advertising, where students came up with their own products and relevant advertising materials. In Term 2. we learnt about narrative structure, moving into writing Screenplays and developing Storyboards as part of the pre-production process. Following this, students completed a range of practical tasks, such as learning to shoot dialogue with the 180 degree rule, developing a 'day in the life' montage, shooting and editing a short suspense film, using practical lighting to develop horror movie posters and finishing up with a 'student's choice' task, which resulted in some amazing work, such as re-makes of TV show intros like The Office & Criminal Minds, music videos, re-cut trailers and more! I’ve been extremely impressed over the Semester with the creativity and dedication to work that has been on display!

Thank you to all Year 9 Media students this semester and I hope to see you all in Year 10 next year, or perhaps even in early start VCE.

Year 11 Media

It’s been a busy Semester in Year 11 Media. Students jumped straight into Media Representations where we looked at how we see ourselves and our world through media products before getting stuck into our first practical assessment where students undertook the production process in the development of two media products. Students produced work such as music videos, short films, trailers, album covers, photography and more! It was great to see such a variety of work and a great chance to practice in preparation for the major practical task in Year 12.

Year 11s, along with the Year 12s, got a chance to view the best short films in the state at the VCE Top Screens excursion. This was an inspiring day for all and really got students to think about what they want to do in Year 12 Media the following year.

Overall, a massive congratulations to all Year 11 Media students for making it through Semester 1. I look forward to getting into Unit 2 when we return from the break.

Year 12 Media

It’s been a big first semester for the Year 12 Media class. Not only have students completed a deep dive into the South Korean megahit, Parasite for their first outcome on Narrative and their contexts, but students have also been steadily developing their folios across the year as part of their major practical assessment. The quality of folios has been nothing short of AMAZING and is a testament to the dedication and passion students have towards their work. In Media, students can choose almost any media form to work in for their major practical task. This year, all students have decided to work with moving image, from music videos to short narrative films.

Below are some of the loglines to show the broad scope of ideas students are developing.

  • An obsessed dinner party host strives to reveal the identity of the guest that ruined her treasured piece of cheese.
  • A teenager finds himself placed in a sinister televised game show where the poor vs the poor in a fight to the death, only to find the reality of winning.
  • An elderly woman reminisces of her time in the 70’s with her former partner.
  • In the year 2039, a man gets his robot to do everything for him, but what happens when all the world’s technology stops working?
  • Rohan receives a family heirloom which flips his reality inside out.
  • When looking back at home videos, the memories of a group of friends being tormented on their Easter holiday is brought to life

As you can see, some amazing concepts that I can’t wait to see evolve into fully fledged media productions.

Students will be busy over the Term 2 break, finally getting behind the camera, asking for “quiet on set” then shouting ACTION! All the best to the Year 12s and I can’t wait to see your work.

…and CUT… that’s a wrap for Semester 1 Media across the school!  See you all in Semester 2.
