My natural disaster is Mount St. Helens landslide in Washington USA. It occurs from heavy rain, volcanos and heavy snow. Landslides impact mental health, houses, food and water supplies.
My invention is to stop landslides from destroying the town. It is called a ‘Stopper’, and it is an underground sensor that detects a landslide and pops out of the ground. It is made out of invisible glass, and it stops the land slide from travelling towards the town or village. The challenge I faced with my 3D model was the clay mountain breaking. I solved this by taping it back together. Next time I won’t make it out of clay so it doesn't fall apart.
The two learner profile attributes I used was caring, because I read my information to the Preps and Year Ones, and communicator because I spoke with a clear loud voice.
My favourite thing about our showcase was making a Kahoot. Next time I will make more information.

I researched an avalanche and I have been learning lots of cool facts. An avalanche starts where snow breaks off a hill because of vibration and flows down causing an avalanche.
A natural disaster is a terrible problem for the community that can cause homes to be destroyed and people to lose their lives. My solution for these problems is a wall that will stop an avalanche from hitting a village. The wall stops the avalanche by rising from the ground by sensors that detect the avalanche.
In the ‘How the world works’ 2024 showcase, I faced some good things and some challenges like having to speak differently to younger year levels as they don't have as big a vocabulary as us. I demonstrated different learner profile attributes and approaches to learning like, communicator, knowledgeable and thinking skills during the showcase.
My favourite part of the showcase would be sharing my knowledge about avalanches with other year levels around the school. I would donate more to places around the world that have experienced these disasters as I now know how destructive they are.

My natural disaster is a pandemic, the Black Death. It occurs by countries not having enough money so if countries don't have enough money they can't pay for clean water or food. I could help by making sure that every county has enough money to pay for clean food and water. My creative way of saving these countries is by having a portable vacuum in every household that sucks up all the bad germs like the flu, Covid 19 and colds so that one day these diseases will be gone. What I found challenging was making my work less mature for the littler grades. Next time I would change my poster by having 1 mature paragraph and then a simple paragraph.
During the showcase I thought that I used the learner profile attributes of principled and knowledgeable. I showed that I was principled by letting the little kids touch my smooth germs and not my spiky germs. I also showed I was knowledgeable by using the information that I've learnt and putting them into my own ideas. I demonstrated the communication skills approach to learning by changing my language and telling the audience in different ways.
What I enjoyed most was presenting my work. I think next time I could make another paragraph about how it links to the main idea.

I have chosen to research about the 1931 China floods. My natural disaster occurs because of lots of heavy rainfall saturating the ground around a river and overflowing it, because of the soil being too saturated the ground can't suck up water so the overflowed water spills into nearby towns and cities. Some impacts of floods are low amounts of food and drinking water, destroyed shelter and loss of animal habitats.
My invention to help people have food and drinking water is the ‘Food- Zooka’. It helps people get food and drinking water by sending a package (with food and drinking water inside) with 1000s of mini jets that propel the package to citizens. It finds citizens by using a heat seeker and a height measurer. The challenge I faced in my showcase was explaining to the preps my information without them getting bored and walking away. I would do it differently next time by explaining the interesting things first to hook them in.
I was reflective because when I explained why floods occur first people would forget and do bad on my Kahoot. But when I explained why floods happen last they remembered and did good on my quiz. I was a communicator because I explained my information clearly so everybody understood. The approach to learning skill I used was research skills. I used research skills by thoroughly researching my topic so I could explain it to others.
The thing I most enjoyed was that I had 55 people come to see my stand. I consider myself very popular.
If I could take further action, I would notify people about how floods work so they don't get surprised and so them how you can slightly prevent floods.

The natural disaster that I chose for my showcase is the Volcano. I learnt that a volcano occurs when magma is pressured to the surface by other types of rocks and erupts once close enough to the surface. Volcanos can cause bushfires and loss of vegetation and loss of crops; can all effect the community and the environment.
My solution is a protective wall the sprays ice and water on to the flowing lava and causes it to freeze and turn into rock. The challenge I faced during the showcase would have to be that my volcano kept drowning in my vinegar. Next time I would put my volcano further off the ground to the stop it from overflowing.
I believe the learner attributes that I showed during this week would have to be communicator and thinker because I spoke clearly and interacted with my audience quite well. I relied on my social skills for this showcase when I spoke to my audience and asked if they had any questions.
The part I enjoyed most would have to be the overall showcase, getting to show off my work and my volcano is something I really enjoyed. A further action I would take would be to set up a donation box for the landslide that recently happened in Papua New Guinea.

For our Year 5 showcase project I researched cyclones, Cyclone Tracy specifically. A cyclone is like a tornado but made of water and it moves very fast. They usually form from cold and warm air colliding, one going up and the other down, and they’re usually stable for a bit until they spin and create a cyclone. Usually cyclones can rip roofs, buildings and cars apart, destroying people’s homes leaving them with rubble, rocks and dirt. Some people thought that Cyclone Tracy wasn't going to actually happen, so they didn't prepare properly. There was another cyclone before it called Cyclone Selma who went over Darwin.
My favourite part of our showcase was making my model and researching. I found researching about it quite fun and enjoyed watching interviews. The models were fun to make because of how much creativity we could use and the surprise of seeing your friends at the end. During the showcase it was boring at sometimes but mostly fun. I loved seeing my friends stalls and how fun their models were.
I think my favourite one was Aria’s and Caitlin's display because of how interactive and nice it was. Theirs was quite realistic and accurate with the food and games, their model was a cardboard box home of a Cyclone Tracy survivor, and they shook the box for extra realism.

We studied natural disasters for our showcase and what they do to the community and environment. I researched a volcano as my natural disaster. A volcano forms by rocks melting deep in the earth’s surface forming magma which shoots out. The impacts of a volcano erupting to a town are heat waves and crops dying which lead to no food. My solution is to build a dome around the crops with lights and sprinklers.
During the Showcase, I showed the learner attribute of knowledgeable by sharing all the information I had researched. While during the showcase I faced a lot of challenges like the younger year levels eating the lava or running out of materials to make my volcano explodes later in the day. I showed research skills by researching to find the information to share with others on the day of the showcase.
I really enjoyed making my volcano at home and doing test runs on it and also taking it to school to share it and making it explode. Further action I would take is finding the answers to harder question that people asked me during the showcase.

I chose to research the natural disaster volcano and volcanic Eruptions. A volcanic eruption occurs when magma rises and collects in magma chambers, eventually the magma pushes through vents and fissures to the earth’s surface. The impact that a volcanic eruption has on the community is that they destroy infrastructure. Their impact on the environment is that they burn thousands of plants.
My solution is a device called 'The Detector' that is placed halfway up the volcano. The detector detects how high the lava is rising and if it is rising high enough to soon erupt, it will automatically set off an alarm if the volcano is to erupt in two weeks’ time. But of course, it will have to have maintenance once a year. Some challenges I faced at the showcase were the walls of my model started to leak when too much lava started to go down to one side. I overcame this by stuffing tissues under my model. If I was to do this again, I would make sure to make my walls more waterproof I also would have brought more vinegar.
I demonstrated the Learner Profile Attributes Knowledgeable and Communicator when I was answering the questions that I was asked at the showcase. I relied on my self-management skills when getting ready for the showcase. I have to be honest for this one, I most enjoyed erupting my volcano at the showcase. If there was any further action that I could take it would be to donate money to the place that has been affected.

In the year 5 showcase we research a natural disaster and made 3D model on them and made a solution. We also researched what affects your natural disasters had on the community, environment, and the people. The natural disaster that I chose was a volcano. Volcanoes can form mountains. Volcanoes over time build up and then erupt, creating ash, rock, and lava. Some of the impacts the community have had are fires, losing their families, lack of food and houses being destroyed. My solution is a detector called the Detector 3000. You put it in the volcano and then when it is about to erupt, it will send you a signal to tell you to get out of where you are.
At the showcase, the challenges I faced were preps and year ones and how they were not listening. At the showcase, I would say that if they don't listen to the information, I would not explode my volcano, In a nice voice.
I think that I showed the learner attribute knowledgeable because I told people my knowledge about Mount Vesuvius. I think I had very good social skills.
What I enjoy most about the showcase was the look on the kids’ faces when they saw the eruption. I feel that I want to learn more about natural disasters.
