Prep Report

Term 1, 2024

Amazing job to all the Prep students for completing their first semester of school! They have engaged in many exciting learning experiences, and the Prep teachers are proud.  

Literacy 

In Reading students have: 

  • consolidated making connection between letters and sounds 
  • received new reading goals of ‘get my mouth ready’ and ‘stretch out the sounds’ 
  • participated in guided reading  
  • participated in reading conferences  
  • looked at making predictions about the books before they read  
  • looked at the features of a fiction book including the characters, setting, beginning, middle and end.  

In Writing, students have: 

  • continued to write daily, focusing on being brave writers  
  • been recording the sounds they hear in words  
  • been experimenting with the use of punctuation e.g. capital letters at the start of sentences, a full stop at the end, and using finger spaces. 

In Handwriting, students have: 

  • improved their fine motor skills, pencil grip and posture  
  • continued to practice correct letter formation. 

In Speaking and Listening, students have: 

  • engaged in a variety of oral language experiences  
  • participated in incursions about community helpers. 

Numeracy 

In Numeracy, students have: 

  • consolidated their understanding of counting forwards and backwards to 20  
  • learnt about place value by exploring the concept of base 10 (making 10) using unifix, blocks and bundling sticks 
  • learnt about teen number e.g. 12 is 10 and 2 more 
  • learnt how to collect data and made data displays  
  • learnt to identify 2D shapes and 3D objects in their environment  
  • learnt about positional language e.g. in front, behind, between and on, and used this vocabulary to follow step by step directions
  • learnt how to measure objects using informal measuring tools such as unifix blocks, paperclips and pencils.  

SEL 

In Social and Emotional Learning, students have: 

  • consolidated their understanding of the core emotions 
  • started to identify their feelings, and use strategies to help them control and express
  • discussed their personal strengths and how they use them in life 
  • learn how to be a good friend to their others.  

 

Inquiry 

In Inquiry, students have: 

  • learnt about people who help them in the community e.g. firefighter and police officers 
  • learnt about road safety for example how to cross the road.

Term 3 Reminders

  • School starts at 8:50am and ends at 3:10pm 
  • The weather will still be cool in Term 3, so please remember to bring jackets and jumpers which are clearly labelled with your child's name 
  • Oxford words will be sent home in the red folders for reading and spelling practise 
  • Please bring a water bottle clearly labelled with your child's name 
  • Monday the 15th of July is a curriculum day 
  • Term 3 will commence on Tuesday the 13th of July 
  • 100 days of school will be celebrated on Thursday the 1st of August.
