Year 5 Report

Term 2 2024

Well done to all Grade 5 students on what has been a busy but successful Term 2!

The students did an amazing job representing our school at the Winter Sports Gala Day. The students demonstrated both their sporting ability and their strong interpersonal and team work skills.

We hope you all have a restful holiday period and we look forward to seeing you all for another fun term in Term 3!

Reading

In reading this term, we looked at a variety Science Fiction and Fantasy stories to determine what is included in a successful story. We compared the stories we had read to learn that both stories have good and evil character who need to solve a problem using either magic or technology. To further support students with Science Fiction and Fantasy stories we explored the types of characters and settings that were used in stories and how the enhanced what they author had written. Students are now focusing on the concept of inference. Inference encourages students to use information from the book and their own previous knowledge to understanding the characters feelings and motives within a text.

Writing

Our writing topic this term has been Science Fiction and Fantasy stories. Students became familiar with the elements required in their stories by reading many in a science fiction or fantasy stories on Get Epic and from our libraries. Students worked through the process of writing; planning, drafting, editing and publishing, writing about topics of interest to them. Students spent time focusing on revising their writing by improving their word choice, adding setting descriptions and character descriptions. We as a celebration of publishing their stories students were able to share their stories with their peers in small groups and with other classes.

Maths

This term our major focus has been fractions and decimals. Students learnt that fractions must be equal amounts and are part of the whole. The students will compare fractions, identify them on a number line, investigate equivalent fractions, and recognise that the place value system extends to tenths, hundredths and thousandths. They will also be making connections between fractions and decimal notation. Students are finishing the term off learning about Probability by playing chance games and discuss their likelihood of chance events occurring using statistical and fractional language.

Inquiry

The Grade 5 Inquiry topic of Government – Do I need them? has supported students to learn about the structure of our political system and how they can have an impact by creating a petition to and submitting it to our local council member. Students have enjoyed our Parliament House Incursion where we recreated the lower house. Students also had our wonderful Parliament house excursion where we toured and explored the lower house and library.

Italian Day

Students enjoyed participating in Bocce and the Giro D'Italia Day race.

Reminders

  • School starts at 8.50. We have a high number of students arriving to school late each day. Ten minutes late each day is 50 minutes of missed learning a week. That's an entire session of learning!
  • Homework. The expectation is that all students read for half an hour each night and record this in their diaries for the teacher to monitor. Students who have been reading have shown great growth in all areas of their learning. Half an hour each night really does make a difference!
