Meet Yuma!

Over the coming months, you may see Yuma visiting our school. Yuma is a 12-week-old Labrador who is part of the Australian Border Force Detector Dog Foster Carer Program. She will live with her volunteer foster family until she is around 18 months old. If she successfully completes her training, she is expected to become an active detector dog at Melbourne Airport, helping protect Australia's borders by detecting prohibited food, plant material, currency and other illegal imports.

As volunteer foster carers, the family's role is to provide Yuma with a loving home while exposing her to everyday life, new people, different environments and basic training. This helps build the confidence, social skills and resilience she will need for her future working career.

Yuma will occasionally visit our school grounds with her foster family and will be wearing her official Detector Dog training jacket. While she's still a puppy, these visits are an important part of her socialisation and training as she learns to remain calm and confident in busy environments.

We look forward to watching Yuma grow and wish her all the best on her exciting journey!

If you spot Yuma around the school, give her a smile or say hello, but please let her concentrate on her important training by not patting or distracting her.
