The Importance of Mental Computation before Learning Formal Written Algorithms

Dear Parents,

As educators, we continuously strive to provide our students with the essential tools for success in mathematics. One fundamental skill we emphasise is mental computation, the ability to solve mathematical problems mentally without the aid of calculators or written methods. Mental computation serves as the cornerstone for developing strong mathematical fluency and problem-solving abilities in our students.

Before delving into formal algorithms and mathematical strategies, it is imperative that our students learn mental computation. According to the NSW Syllabus, mental computation plays a pivotal role in laying the groundwork for mathematical proficiency across all stages of learning. By encouraging mental computation, we empower our students to approach mathematical problems with confidence, flexibility and creativity. Moreover, proficiency in mental computation equips students with invaluable life skills, enabling them to make quick and accurate calculations in everyday situations.

As partners in your child's education, we encourage you to support the development of mental computation skills at home. Simple activities such as mental math challenges during daily routines and practicing mental calculations will support your child's mathematical abilities.

Thank you for your continued support in fostering a mathematically enriching environment for our students.
