Scotsburn Relocation to Buninyong Tomorrow - Wednesday 28th February

Whilst we were hoping that we would have no more extreme or catastrophic fire danger days this summer, unfortunately we have another ominous-looking day tomorrow.

Tomorrow (28th February) the current fire risk rating is EXTREME with high winds, meaning that we will again need to relocate to the Buninyong Campus for the day.

As we have always outlined, the safety of your children is our number one priority. Our routines are now great with these relocation days, and we will be sure to prepare the students well today.

Our Art and Japanese program with Liz will continue as normal, in learning spaces at the Buninyong campus.

We will continue with the following arrangements:

  • Bus travellers will continue as normal, with drop off and pick up now at Buninyong
  • Classrooms will be made available for both SC1 and SC2 at Buninyong throughout the day
  • A Scotsburn staff member will be up at Scotsburn before school this morning to catch any students who miss the messages about relocation. Staff can also transport students to Buninyong for families who can’t drop off at Buninyong.
  • Students to meet Mrs Robinson and Mr Morgan from 8:45am in the courtyard at Buninyong
  • Lunch orders will continue as normal.

Any questions, feel free to come and see the Scotsburn staff this afternoon or contact Jarrod directly.

Costa Visit

What a positive vibe we had going on last Friday! With inspiration, happiness, and positivity gushing from Costa, the atmosphere was sensational.

Students had an amazing time meeting a celebrity but it was more than that, it was a feeling of excitement about the small adjustments we can make to achieve a more sustainable future and how we can make a huge difference.

The rotations that students participated in, recycle tazo build, water bug ID, gardening, and worm farming, were engaging and fun for everyone, while still sending that important message of sustainability and caring for our animals and the planet and how everything is connected.

For those of you who would like to listen, Costa crossed over to ABC Sydney radio after school and did his segment, live from the Scotsburn Campus (about 1h 9 min in), and shared with everyone the fabulous afternoon he had  (listen right to the end for a laugh) Click Here.

Thank you to everyone who helped on the day, Costa could not stop saying how amazing our small campus was. He has never been greeted by such a happy crowd and with Pip the blue tongue in amongst the excitement! A moment he said he will never forget!

It was wonderful to share the afternoon with some of our Buninyong Campus students from the Ready-Set-Grow program and the Grade 6 Sustainability Team.

A huge thank you to Justin Weyers for helping make all this possible, Bianca from Leigh Catchment Group for the water bug ID, and Simon for organising the setting up of the worm farm.

To all the parents in attendance, thank you for your support and we hope you liked the special afternoon tea of freshly baked goods from the school garden, local produce, and Salt Bush Kitchen.

Thanks again to everyone! We have so many fabulous photos to share with you. Please click on the link to view some special photos from the afternoon - Costa Visit Photos

Meet and Greet Afternoon

Last Wednesday we held our Meet and Greet parent forum and interviews. As a staff we felt that the parent forum structure was really purposeful and it was really well received from those in attendance.

If you were unable to make it to the forum last week and would like to receive the information that was covered, come and see one of the Scotsburn staff and we will get the information to you. With this format being so successful at Scotsburn, we will look to continue this at the start of next year.

Scotsburn Parent Volunteer Roster

As you are all aware, at Scotsburn we rely heavily on volunteers to help us run the programs that we do, and we love and appreciate all the support that we get. Please see below the link to the Term 1 Scotsburn volunteer roster. We would love as many parents as possible to sign up for a little or as much as you would like.

If you haven’t volunteered with us before, we will be there to help along the way. If the document is not working for you, please come in and see us and we can add you to the list.

Please remember that we will need a copy of your Working With Children’s check if we don’t already have it on file.

Grade 3 - 6 Interhouse Athletics Day

Our interhouse athletics day for Grade 3-6 students is on next Tuesday (5th March). This is always a great day, full of fun and excitement. On the day, we will start and finish at the Buninyong campus, where we will then bus to and from the Llanberris Athletics Track.

Later this week and on Monday next week, we will remind students (particularly our new students) which house they are in so that they know which colours to wear on the day. Please remember to pack students’ school hat as well as lots of food and drink.

Prep Interviews

Just a reminder that Preps have Wednesdays off for the month of February. This time off is to ensure that children have the chance to recharge mid-week as they settle into school.

Teddy Bears’ Picnic

SC1 students have the pleasure of hosting the Grade Prep students from the Buninyong Campus this coming Tuesday 5th March. Students are welcome to bring a special teddy bear or soft toy from home for the day.

SC1 Learning Snapshot

Wow - what a week! Despite the disruption from the extreme weather conditions, students were settled and ready to learn. This goes to show how well our students here at Scotsburn adapt and are ready to take on learning, no matter what challenges may be present. This also comes from parent support and encouraging your children - so thank you.

This week in English we have continued our journey of reading and spelling and how to decode words. We have also focussed on re-telling stories in a sequence and vocabulary, understanding what words mean, and then exploring synonyms (words that mean the same) and antonyms (opposite).

In Maths, we have moved into exploring place value (number). We have been looking a numbers and how numbers are built. For example - 352 is made up of 3 hundreds, 5 tens, and 2 ones, or 300 + 50 + 2. Students love the challenge of breaking apart big numbers.

Thank you once again for supporting our home reading and homework programs. We have been blown away by the amount of students reading and completing their homework this year as well as bringing in their reader pouches each day to school.

Please remember if there is anything we can do to support your child, we are always here to discuss matters with you. Have a brilliant week.

Thanks,

Ana and Kirsty

SC2 Learning Snapshot

Another busy and exciting week has passed in SC2, with lots of new learning getting underway. Along the way,  students have done such an amazing job with the extreme weather disruptions, maintaining strong routines and learning behaviours.

This week in English, our students are learning to summarise fiction and non-fiction texts effectively, as well as put the finishing touches on their narrative planners. They will be ready to write next week, which lots of students are eager to do!

In Maths we have begun to use our learnt knowledge on length and measurement, to apply to the concepts of perimeter and area. There will be lots of practical examples and activities happening in the classroom for students to make accurate measurements and calculations.

Thanks again for the amazing organisation our students have started the year with in terms of homework and home reading. We have lots of students well past the 10 days sticker on our class chart, which is great to see.

We look forward to another week of fun learning and excitement in SC2!

Scotsburn Intercampus Travel

At times, Scotsburn students will be transported between campuses in order to attend classes, assemblies, special days and events. On most occasions, transport required through the day will be by bus and occasionally private car for smaller groups of students. Parents may be asked to drop off or collect from the Buninyong campus if sessions are at the beginning or ending of a day.

We will always let you know of any upcoming travel arrangements via our newsletter, Compass, or via phone for smaller, more specific travel arrangements.

If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding intercampus travel, please contact your child’s teacher.

The Scotsburn Team

On Sunday, we supported the local community group Buninyong Sustainability Group at their local Smart Living Exhibition. Students showcased some of the great programs and opportunities we have at Buninyong PS.

Kaiya sold out of her worm wee, the Energy Breakthrough bikes were a huge success along with the Solar Boats and plants that were on offer for children to plant and take home thanks to Bunnings Warehouse Delacombe.

A huge thank you to Graeme Benn, our school council president, for coming along to speak on behalf of our school community, as well as all the 5/6 student helpers and parents who came along on the day to help. We look forward to doing it all again next year.
