Dance at MGC

I’ve been so lucky this term to see the passion and dedication from MGC students through both our curricular and extra-curricular dance programs. Students have had the opportunity to learn from a huge range of professional dancers and choreographers including Benjamin Curé, Lachlan Hall, Kaitlin Malone, Brooke Bond, Andrea Arena, Su Min Lee and Madeline Pratt.

A highlight of the year so far has been seeing the commencement of the Dance Program where students are training throughout the week in Contemporary, Commercial Jazz and Acrobatics. I’ve been so impressed by the focus and commitment demonstrated and can’t wait to see their routines on stage at the MGC Dance Night on Friday May 10th. Tickets can now be reserved via Humanitix: https://events.humanitix.com/dance-night-semester-one-2024/tickets

I have also been gathering expressions of interest for merchandise purchases. Please fill out the following form by Monday March 11th and I will reach out to collect sizing information shortly: https://forms.office.com/r/s8ejCvpbR8

Our VCE students have also been working hard as they learn their group choreography with Lachlan Hall (Transit Dance) and develop their Cohesive Composition Solos in Unit 1 and their Skills Solos in Unit 3. They were also thrilled to attend VCE Dance Top Class on Wednesday March 7th where they had the opportunity to view and reflect on high-achieving solo performances from 2023.

Finally, the Year 9 Dance elective students are learning Contemporary and Commercial group dances with Kaitlin Malone (Transit Dance, Stephanie Lake Company, Scimm Dance Company) and Brooke Bond (Boss Dance Company). These students have shown outstanding skill and focus during these classes and will be presenting these routines alongside their own choreography at Dance Night!

 Year 12 Drama 2024

After exploring a variety of theatre practitioners, their theories and their contribution to modern theatre, the year 12 Drama class has moved on to their first Learning Outcome for VCE Drama – Devising an Ensemble Performance. In this area of study students develop and present a devised ensemble performance whereby they examine the work of a range of drama practitioners working in selected performance styles to explore how dramatic work is created. Students work with given stimulus material and guidelines that provide a starting point for the structure of a performance. This year’s stimulus material theme is:

“Speak up, even if your voice shakes”.

This performance might follow the rise and fall, or the fall and rise of both victims and perpetrators of bullying. Groups are allocated and all students are eager to get stuck into this initial task. Stay tuned for updates on the evolution of these performance pieces, and performance dates. Chookas – class of 2024!

Year 10 Drama – Semester One 2024

In year 10 Drama this term we have been focusing on utilizing the expressive skills of “Gesture, Movement, Voice & Facial Expression” to create character. We have also explored the different Conventions of Theatre to structure performance. These conventions include; transformation of time, place, character and object, along with Heightened Use of Language, Stillness & Silence, and Exaggerated Movement. You might see some of these conventions at play in the images below.
