Assistant Principals' Report

Rachel Robertson, Years 7 & 8

We are delighted to share with you the vibrant and enthusiastic participation of our Year 7 and 8 students at the recent Swimming Carnival. It was a joy to witness the colourful outfits, spirited competition, creative zinc face-painting, and enthusiastic cheering!

The Wellbeing program continues in Year 7 and 8 with a focus on Gratitude and Empathy. An activity that you may like to try at home to support the learning happening at school is the Family Habit Builder. This involves each family member taking turns to express gratitude towards another family member for something they have done or said that has been helpful during the week. It is a simple activity to help increase awareness around things we are grateful for.

Additionally, Year 7s have been introduced to the House Reading Challenge, which commenced on 26th February and will run until the end of Term 2 (28th June). We encourage all year 7 students to enter this competition and give it a go – whether you are a slow and considered reader (like me), or a fast and efficient one!

Our Homework club is now in full swing. It runs on Monday and Thursday from 3:30 – 4:30pm in Library B. From Week 6 onwards until the end of term, it tends to be a very busy time for the completion of Learning Tasks, so this club is in place to help provide extra support for students who need it, or indeed just a space for students to work independently.

Renee Liprino, Years 9 & 10

It has been a very eventful few weeks - with the MGC Swimming Carnival (where I was certain Maris should have won the cheering competition), Photo Day, and my Sunday visit to the RAAF Recruit Experience Camp.

A huge thank you to the Year 10 Team - Claire Tudor, Alex Steer, Catie Cameron-Martin and Carolyn Zimmerman for their organisation of the Elevate Educate program, to assist with Year 10 Studies. I’m also super impressed with the amount of participation in MAPPS, to support students with recognising mental health concerns and knowing where to get support.

Careers – Amber Munroe and Mella Pescos, and the Year 9 Team have also started the Career Action Plans (CAPs) with all Year 9 Students. Please ask your child/ren about this process, as it will assist with future subjects and possible career pathways.

I’d like to thank Cadet Leader – Ken Callegari and the MGC RAAF Cadets for inviting me to visit the base at Point Cook. I was able to see our students marching, the impressive leadership of our older students supporting new recruits and went through the museum with a team of MGC Cadets. It was great hearing about their flights – and amazing the no one had motion sickness as they flew across the coast. I recommend families go and check out the museum, the old planes were spectacular.

A shout-out to the clubs who showed their stalls on Clubs Expo Day. I took photos (see below) and will be using these to show our new students the great things that are available to them at MGC.

We are now over the Term 1 hump week and heading towards NAPLAN for our Year 9s.

What a jam-packed Term!

Katherine Warriner, Years 11 & 12

It has been an exciting few weeks at Melbourne Girls’ College. The students are settling in to their studies and have had the opportunity to participate in a number of events. My first MGC Swimming Carnival was a wonderful display of house spirit and creativity. The Year 12 students embraced their final Swimming Carnival and dressed up in some fabulous costumes, led the house cheers and managed to make it from one end of the pool to the other in, or near, a variety of inflatable objects. The Pedal Cinema event was also well attended and the students put in a phenomenal effort to ensure there was enough power to make it through the Barbie movie.

One of the highlights for me was supporting the Student Club Expo, where our diverse range of clubs welcomed new members with open arms, igniting excitement about the upcoming activities they have in store. These clubs serve as invaluable platforms for students to cultivate leadership skills, share their passions, and forge meaningful connections with their peers.

On a more serious note, we recently hosted a Youth Mental Health First Aid training session for parents, providing them with insights into the challenges facing our youth and equipping them with strategies to support their children during difficult times. This course is offered again in September and we encourage parents to sign up for this later in the year.

As I reflect on the eve of International Women's Day, I'm filled with pride at the overwhelming turnout for our celebratory breakfast. Staff, students, and esteemed alumni gathered to commemorate this special day, with the latter graciously sharing their post-MGC journeys to inspire the next generation of trailblazers. Here's to a future filled with boundless possibilities and empowered women leading the charge!
