Making the most of our opportunities

This year, as usual, our students have been provided with many and varied learning opportunities. Our teachers have encouraged students to not waste any opportunity to grow into the person God wants them to be. The classic film ‘Papillon’ shows what a life of wasted opportunities looks like.

The main character, Papillon, was a criminal that had been imprisoned for life. What was he in for? Crimes against the French state. The movie reveals some of the dreams Papillon had while in prison. In one dream, Papillon stands before a tribunal for a crime he did not commit. He pleads with the judge to find him not guilty of the crime. However, the judge declares that Papillon was not being tried for crimes against the French state but a crime against the entire human race. Confused, Papillon asked what crime he had committed against humanity? The judge simply replied,

“The crime of a wasted life”. At that point Papillon wept and woke up.

Our hope is that our WCC students do not see their education as a waste of time but rather continue to take hold of daily learning moments in school and throughout their lives, finding meaning within each activity. In the school context, our students have been given many opportunities to learn, and we have endeavoured to do our best to target our instruction to ensure that they make the most of their education.

Students have enjoyed Chapel services and made the most of worship. They have heard the gospel message in many different contexts! Students have been encouraged to join in service learning, making meals for the disadvantaged. In the classroom, inquiry-based learning has been embedded into the curriculum, and this has provided students with times of critical thinking and deep questioning. Students have also worked hard to understand the knowledge and skills required for success.

It has been encouraging to reflect on the past year and I am thankful for our teachers, who have provided rich learning experiences for their students.

As you prepare for the Christmas period, can I encourage you to reflect on the year that has been for you and to pinpoint those meaningful moments as life-long learner, and that gratitude can flourish.

Year 1 Alumni Reunion

One of the highlights of this year was the return of our 2022 graduates who reconnected at the Knox Club for food, fun and memories. We had a large contingent of our Alumni present and it was a joy to hear what God has been doing in their first year away from the College. Please continue to pray for our Alumni as we trust in God to protect and guide them in their future endeavours.

In mid-August, an article was published in the Age newspaper announcing the schools in the State that bring the best out of their students. Waverley Christian College was nominated and won the prestigious “Schools that Excel” award for 2023.

This award recognises the growth in VCE results over the last decade, growing from a median score of 32 to 35 and VCE study scores above 40 jumping from 11 to 19.4%. We celebrated the achievements of our students and teachers and will continue to do our best to disciple the next generation of young people for the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

WS Campus Building Update

This year, we officially started the next major building project, the construction of our secondary South Wing. This new construction will provide our senior students with much needed space, filled with more general learning areas, common areas for collaboration, learning and specialised common spaces for our Year 11 and 12 students.

I am also pleased that we will have a dedicated study area for our senior students giving them every opportunity to excel in their studies.

Over the last two months, we have seen great advancement in the construction of the South Wing building project!

We are excited to see progress in brickworks, work on the roof and window installation. We expect the new building to be open and operational by mid-2024.

Please continue pray for this building project, as we move closer toward its completion.
