Around the Grounds

Diocesan Athletics

On Friday 18th September, 42 students travelled to Tamworth for the Diocesan Athletics Carnival. Although windy and cool, our team of athletes were successful in achieving some great results, including many children qualifying for finals, gaining places in races and performing personal bests. A special mention to a number of our students who received an age championship and runner up; Josh Jeffrey Jnr Boy Runner Up, Angus Simpson Snr Boy Runner Up, Isabella Hamilton 11years Girl Champion, Ruby Cygan 11years girl runner up and Josh Spinks 11 year Boy Champion. Josh Spinks was also successful in breaking a diocesan record in the 11 year boys High Jump. Josh jumped a height of 1.41m, surpassing the old record which had been held by St Xavier’s ex-student Hayden Jaeger.

An impressive team of 18 athletes from St Xavier’s have qualified, gaining selection into the Armidale Diocese Athletics team, for the Polding Athletics Championships to be held on Friday 13th October, at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. We wish them all the best with their training leading up to this carnival.

NSWPSSA RUGBY

Angus Simpson and Nash Groth are currently in Camden as part of the Polding Rugby Team competing at the NSWPSSA Rugby Championships. Good luck boys!

School Sport Australia Swimming Championships

Alexis Whitton and Molly Ramien will make an early exit from their Year 6 Sydney excursion for one of their most challenging and exciting swimming competitions yet when they take on the best in Australia at the School Sport Australia Championships at Sydney Olympic Park this weekend.

Alexis will swim the 12 years girls 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, 200m Individual Medley, 100m breaststroke, 100m backstroke and the freestyle and medley 4x50m relays. It follows her success at the NSW PSSA Swimming Championships in April where she won silver in the 50m and 100m freestyle.

Molly will compete in the 11 years girls 50m and 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 200m Individual Medley and the backstroke leg in the 4x50m medley relay. To qualify, she won gold and the state championship title at the PSSA event in the 50m backstroke.

The girls' Nationals journey began at our St Xavier's Primary School swimming carnival in February, before going on to compete at Diocesan level, Polding and then the PSSA State Championships where they medalled and qualified for the School Sport Australia Championships.

They will meet their NSW squad members on Friday for team photos and an official warm up session at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. The girls will also go on a state team excursion to Darling Harbour on Saturday and visit Wildlife Sydney, Madame Tussauds and Sea Life.

We will be cheering you on girls!
